Arctic Lullaby

Simpson and Défago made camp, and it soon became clear that Défago senses – or at least he thought he sensed – some strange and fearful odor on the wind. That night, Simpson wakes to find Défago cowering in terror from something outside the tent. Later Défago runs off into the night, forcing Simpson to go and look for him. He follows his footprints in the snow for many miles, realizing that Défago's are not the only set of tracks. The larger set of footprints are not human, and gradually it seems that Défago's own tracks had metamorphosed into smaller versions of the larger set. Eventually, both sets of tracks vanish, and Simpson believes he hears Défago's distant voice calling out from somewhere in the sky above.

It is very difficult to bypass the dreamguard.
Every time I realize that I’m sleeping now, he opens his eyes and goes to look for me.
Every time he finds me, he takes on different forms.
He can seduce, deceive, scare, buy, distract, surprise.
The Guardian is very good at his art and always chooses what distracts my attention, what interests me.
Once his work is done, sleep engulfs me again. I wake up every morning and understand that he again did not let me into his lands.
Today I sneak through the deserts of his land. I do not succumb to any beauty or miracles that are constantly happening around - because I know that these are his tricks.
This has been happening for so long that I begin to think..if this road is endless, is he himself and my desire to pass him by - is this also his game?
