Death, depression, substance abuse and hustle, common themes in hip hop due to its natural ties to the underprivileged communities in America. Continually we are bombarded with images of hostile, hyper sexualized super men, who walks the streets of death, armed to the tee just to make it through the day. And while many of these narratives are absolutely true, we seldom get to sense the pain and frustration from a truly poetic and progressive point of view. Myrts Sons debut album Thanks for Asking provides just that, and is exceptionally well in doing so. Like the story of the lotus flower growing from mud, here we are witnessing the birth and growth of a man, from the sullen places of depression and restlessness to the heightened mountaintops of aspiration, love, and determination. If you’ve ever wanted to see the butterflies struggle and what it took to become itself look no further.
