We Started a Fire

When it comes to bands, we here at NYLON are very down with boy-girl duos, and our latest crush is on Nashville pair MYZICA. Producer Micah Tawlks and singer Isaaca Byrd both emerged from Nashville's fertile music scene, but don't expect forlorn country ballads or twangy, nationalistic anthems. Instead, they make shimmering, emotive pop music, which you can hear on their latest single, "Wait Just a Minute."

Nashville doesn’t automatically conjure thoughts of bubbly indie-pop bands, but MYZICA — a.k.a. Tennessee-based producer Micah Tawlks and singer Isaaca Byrd — break all country-fried clichés in their slick new single, “Wait Just a Minute.” Surrounded by an outpouring of shimmering synths, Byrd’s silky vocals channel Feist circa “One Two Three Four,” while the track — which will be digitally released come April 21 — bounds along with the chipper spunk you really need as the winter chill refuses to give way to spring.

CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND:

Nashville may boast some of the best country music the US has to offer, but it’s also home to a number of promising young pop acts. Case in point: newcomers MYZICA. Comprising singer Isaaca Byrd and producer Micah Tawlks, the duo swaps twangy and pastoral ballads in favor of glossy, balloon-sized synthpop gems. The band will proudly rep a different side to the Music City on its self-titled debut EP, due out on June 9th through Peptalk Records/Tone Tree.

As a preview, MYZICA’s revealed “We Started A Fire”, an alluring number that calls to mind like-minded groups CHVRCHES and Haerts. (And no, it’s not a companion piece to Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire”.) Here, Byrd is shrouded in smoky synths, as her vocals burn brightly like a flame refusing to die down.
