The Beez

Particles EP

Although a fixed work from its inception, this piece started life as a short study into creating crystal clear sonic qualities within aspects of Max programming, synthesis, field and studio recording.  Over time, however, it became a stand-alone creative composition exploring the cosmic boundaries of natural and synthetic sounds.

Within the programming aspects processing including additive, subtractive, and FM synthesis have been used to sculpt various bells, overtones and marble effects.  All 'synth' sounds, particularly sustained tones, have been self-crafted within a sign tone generator synth, whilst further sound design has been recorded in both field and studio settings to enhance the overall concept, also adding a tertiary dimension to the piece.

Whilst not rigid or linear in its structure, certain elements of the composition reflect parts of the Creation Story.  For example, the silent opening demonstrates the nothingness before the Big Bang, and the use of a chord at 11:04 points loosely towards the creation of the planets, and our scientific understanding of the structures in classical music.  Overall, the biblical text has formed the foundation of this piece, but natural progression has completed its architecture.

"When a Hydrogen atom reacts with a neutrino, a Muon is created".

A micro-sonic composition made within the SuperCollider programming environment.  The piece takes the concept of individual atoms into the sound domain, with the behaviour stochastically controlled within fixed-parameter mapping systems.  Its sonic qualities are derived from FM synthesis,  and its peak points of density have been further modelled with various comb filters.

The composition opens with the birth of a Muon atom and goes on to trace the journey of it repelling another Muon, with the understanding of the Pauli Exclusion Principle firmly routed in the concept.  Finally, after exploring the various interactions of a Muon atom, its short life span, once combined with a suitably matched atom, comes to an end.
