With their 4th LP, The Black Hollies have effectively stripped off their retro leanings and immersed themselves in a spacey psychedelic dream whose time and place is as universal as the melodies that float in and out of the haze they've created. Led by Justin Angelo Morey and his long time collaborators Herbert Wiley and Jon Gonnelli (all three of whom are also members of the recently reunited Rye Coalition) as well as drummer Nick Ferrante (White Hills), the band's latest album is the product of nearly three years of writing and recording.

Initially conceived in 2010 the record was repeatedly scrapped and restarted while Morey demoed a huge amount of music in both Jersey City and Nashville. Ultimately he entered Moonlight Mile studio in Hoboken with engineer Mike Moebius in January of 2012 with 20+ songs loosely arranged in his head and a plan to put them all to tape over the course of 3 weekends. Instead the process took nearly a year of constant recording and rearranging, with the band members all contributing to an endless wall of sounds utilizing rare fuzz boxes and old combo organs and Morey himself tracking everything from his usual bass and vocals to drums and guitar. 

The end result is the most timeless record of the bands career with influences as divergent as Spacemen 3, Can, The 13th Floor Elevators, and The Stone Roses weaving in and out of noise drenched pop songs and extensive hallucinatory suites that never fully obscure the catchy core that exists Somewhere Between Here And Nowhere.

Sigue Sigue Sputnik...

ist eine Punk-Band aus England, welche Mitte der 1980er mit ihrem Hit Love Missile F1-11 größere Bekanntheit erlangte. In der Anfangsformation setzte sich Sigue Sigue Sputnik zusammen aus den Bandmitgliedern: Tony James (Gitarre), Martin Degville (Gesang), Neal X (Gitarre), Chris Kavanagh (Schlagzeug) und Ray Mayhew (Schlagzeug).

Sigue Sigue Sputnik wurde 1983 von Tony James gegründet, der zuvor als Bassist in der Band Generation X von Billy Idol war, den er noch von früher aus den Punkrock-Zeiten kannte. Anfänglich lud er Andrew Eldritch und auch Annie Lennox, die spätere Sängerin der Eurythmics, in die neue Band als Sänger ein. Eldritch jedoch wollte sich lieber um seine 1980 gegründete und immer erfolgreicher werdende Band The Sisters Of Mercy kümmern und sagte ab. Auf die damals noch unbekannte Lennox wollte sich James jedoch nicht einlassen, obwohl sie eine fabelhafte Stimme hatte, denn er wollte für seine Formation keine Frau als Sängerin an der Spitze haben. Schließlich konnte er Martin Degville als Sänger für Sigue Sigue Sputnik gewinnen.

Debüt-Album:

1986 debütierten sie mit ihrem Album Flaunt it und landeten auch gleich einen Hit mit Love Missile F1-11, der auch auf dem Soundtrack zum Spielfilm Ferris macht blau zu finden war. Auch ihre zweite Single-Auskopplung 21st Century Boy war nahezu genauso erfolgreich. Für die damalige Zeit neuartig war auch die Aufmachung ihrer Debüt-LP, die einerseits in einer sehr breiten Hülle verpackt wurde, und dadurch eher wie ein Buch im Regal wirkte, und andererseits die Tatsache, daß sie die „Pausen“ zwischen den einzelnen Songspuren als Werbeblöcke z.B. für Studio Line von L’Oreal versteigerten.

Im November 1988 erschien die Single Success (Platz 31 in Großbritannien), die von den Erfolgsproduzenten Stock Aitken Waterman produziert wurde. Da die Band mehr oder weniger von ihrer Plattenfirma zu dieser Zusammenarbeit gezwungen worden war, enthielt die Single eine Warnung: „Non Rock and Roll product, distributed under pressure“. Auf dem Cover der Single sind als Interpreten dann auch „Sputnik Aitken Waterman“ genannt.

Der Bandname: "Sigue Sigue Sputnik" SSS aka ジグ・ジグ・スパトニック

Da nach Ansicht Tony James’ besonders der Name einer Band für den Anfangserfolg extrem wichtig war, wurde auch aus marketingpolitischen Gründen für die Findung eines klanglich prägnanten und vielversprechenden Bandnamens sehr viel Zeit verwendet. Denn der Bandname sollte vor allem auf Seiten der Presse Neugier nach seiner Herkunft erwecken und so zu vermehrten Anfragen und damit einhergehend Pressemeldungen führen. Schließlich half der Zufall. Benannt wurde die Band letztlich nach einer Streetgang aus Moskau von der die Herald Tribune in einem Artikel Anfang 1980 berichtete.

Optisches und akustisches Auftreten:

Sigue Sigue Sputnik fielen vor allem durch ihre schrillbunte Kleidung auf, ihr für die damalige Zeit - trotz Punkbewegung - immer noch sehr andersartiges Aussehen bezüglich Piercings, Tätowierungen und Frisuren sowie ihr bewusst provozierendes, oft auch geschmackloses Auftreten. Daher wurde die Band in der Presse oft nur noch „Sick Sick Sputnik“ (sick = krank) genannt. Den Sound kennzeichneten schnelle, aggressive, in Zügen bereits technoartige (damals eher futuristisch) klingende Rhythmen sowie sehr kurze, teils wirre Songtexte über eine oftmals düstere Zukunft. Anfänglich ging es Sigue Sigue Sputnik vor allem darum möglichst schnell aufzufallen und häufig in der Presse zu erscheinen, um so ein entsprechendes, wildes Punkrock-Image aufzubauen. Es wird Sigue Sigue Sputnik nachgesagt, dass ihnen die Show und das Aufsehen um sie wichtiger war, als ihre eigentliche Musik.

Nach dem zweiten Album Dress for Excess fiel die Ursprungsformation jedoch auseinander. Tony James wechselte daraufhin als Bassist zu den Sisters of Mercy, wo er von 1989 bis 1991 blieb. Chris Kavanagh ging zu Big Audio Dynamite, und Neal X trat nochmals auf einem Album von Marc Almond auf. 1991 kam Sigue Sigue Sputnik erneut zusammen, wenn auch nur für kurze Zeit, denn 1992 trennten sie sich wieder.

Im Zuge des 80er-Revivals gelang es Tony James auch 2001 die Bandmitglieder Neal „X“ Whitmore und Martin Degville wieder zusammenrufen und die Band ein drittes Mal zu vereinen. Sie produzierten ein neues Album namens „Pirate Space“, welches jedoch nicht an die früheren Erfolge anschließen konnte, in Fankreisen jedoch sehr wohlwollend aufgenommen wurde.

2004 zerstritten sich die beiden Parteien Martin Degville und James/Neal X und gehen seither getrennte Wege. Die Hintergründe der Trennung sind unklar. Martin Degville, der in der Partyszene Londons eine lokale Größe ist, versucht mit seinem Projekt Sputnik2 an alte Erfolge anzuknüpfen. Tony James widmet sich seiner neuen Band Carbon Silicon, die er zusammen mit Mick Jones (The Clash) gegründet hat.
