04 Rebel Rebel

A little back story on this one, for those of you that may be interested. I'd wanted to do an edit of this wonderful track for ages but couldn't figure out how to approach it when along came Mark E with "Scared", an edit which solved the issue of how to deal with the two separate parts of the track beautifully - extend the intro, tease it out and simply drop into the main part of the original, leaving it as is. Brilliant! The only snag for me was that "Scared" wasn't in the style that I was looking for personally. So, I proceeded to copy Mark E's blueprint using a different groove. I filtered the intro and beat, jammed along on keys over the top, working it to the max, before dropping back into the original at the drop. I've had a lot of fun playing this one out over the years, it works equally well in house clubs and soul all-nighters alike. I've left the edit as is,  the way I first recorded it, nice and loose (nothing to do with locating 9+ year old files  on hard drives ;)). I hope you all enjoy it and play it out often and loud!

Bjarki just dropped the first part of a 41 track archive released over three LPs... whatever you do, don't call it an album. The three LP's will instead represent a snapshot of his genre-defying archive.  The three LPs aren’t albums in the traditional sense - the concept was simply to release the contents of his burgeoning hard drives. 

The first part of the three part archive is cyrillic for "B" and although all the tracks are solid, there is one that stood out to us in particular. "The Lover That You Are" kicks off with some ethereal pads and filtered down percussion that slowly begins to reveal itself in full as the resonance gets turned up to eleven to suddenly drop you into a break-heavy moody Techno banger. One of the best qualities of this track is how skilfully it plays with tension and release and honestly we can't get enough of it. Phonica Premieres: Bjarki - The Lover That You Are [TRIP]

On Data Transmission, we're premiering a remix of The Finding by Sinistarr, of Los Angeles-based sound artist HÄANA. With forward-thinking beats and driving bass contrasting with HÄANA's ethereal otherworldly vocals and string treatments. This is the fourth remix from the upcoming Brym Remix Album out 6.28.16.

Sinistarr is one of the leaders of the dance music new school, a triple-threat as a DJ/Producer/serial Remixer who's as well known for his forward-thinking beats as he is for nightclub domination. If you know drum and bass you know Sinistarr as a respected junglist who's dropped heavyweight tracks over the years on Goldie's Metalheadz imprint, Doc Scott's 31 Recordings, Hospital Records, Architecture Recordings and Renegade Hardware.

Recently though, the man's been everywhere, applying his signature style to diverse sounds like footwork, techno and house with releases and remixes on SMOG, Tectonic,  Human Elements,  Seclusiasis, Juke Trax, and Loose Squares that show him moving beyond dance music conventions and constantly reaching out to  a new audience.
