Formed in late 2008, Leeds and London based Nibiru are a band playing music you wouldn’t expect a live band to play.  Influenced by a myriad of music styles including drum and bass, breakbeat, dubstep, house, electro and blues, the Nibiru sound uniquely blends live performance and electronic music.  

Multi-instrumentalists Mwen (vocals/drums), Jimmy (synths/harmonica/programming), and Woody (guitar/bass/programming) came together after a chance introduction and jam at a Leeds rehearsal studio in early 2008. It wasn’t until nearly a year later that the three were to officially form the band and gig as a unit.  All three musicians brought a wealth of performance and composition experience to the new project having been involved in the Leeds music scene for a number of years playing in various bands. Jimmy and Woody were, for a time, members of world music band Feluka, a band which achieved some success culminating with a set on Glastonbury’s Jazz World Stage.  Mwen was a vocalist with live drum and bass band Hayashi for a number of years during which time the band recorded its second studio album and played a number of high profile gigs including support slots for Pendulum, Skream, Prime Cuts, Part Time Heroes and a set at Leeds Festival.  Initially, the three musicians set out to form a collective, of sorts, whereby other like-minded musicians would be invited to play at gigs and improvise. However, it wasn’t long before it became apparent that the three were more than capable of carrying the project forward on their own. Although the idea of periodically inviting guest musicians to play with the band has by no means been abandoned, all of Nibiru’s recorded material to date has been written by Mwen, Woody and Jimmy.    

Nibiru write, record and produce their own music, with the exception of their re-worked drum and bass version of the jazz classic 'Mood Indigo'.  The recorded material is often built from live takes and jams and this organic approach to the recording process injects a unique feel to the music. This approach also lends itself to breaking down the barrier many bands face between the feel of their recorded material and live performances.  With Nibiru it almost always feels live, sounds like it should be blasted at full volume and was meant for the dancefloor.
