«D’un appareil de distribution, la radio est à transformer en appareil de communication.» écrit Bertold Brecht il y a 90 ans. La radio doit être pensée non comme un simple outil de diffusion sonore mais plutôt comme un agent de modification des liens sociaux. Radio Symétrique est un projet de territoire radio autonome qui émet en FM aux alentours de Mains d’Oeuvres durant l’exposition sur le 107.9 MHz. Tout le monde peut passer en direct à la radio en appelant au 06 60 27 17 23. Les messages s’accumulent au fur et à mesure de l’exposition et sont diffusés en permanence sur la radio.

La verticalité habituelle des médias - une poignée de personnes s’expriment alors qu’un grand nombre écoute - est abolie au profit d’un dispositif qui permet à chacun·e de s’exprimer sans filtre éditorial. Radio symétrique est donc une expérimentation médiatique, politique et sociale, dans la lignée des téléphones ouverts de Radio Alice, Radio ici et Maintenant ou ∏node. Quel type de contenu génère ce dispositif et quel type de liens crée-t-il?

Radio symétrique est une radio de quartier : seuls les postes radios situés aux alentours de Mains d’Oeuvres peuvent l’écouter. En appelant la radio, c’est donc aux personnes derrière ces postes à qui l’on s’adresse : habitant·es, travailleur·ses et visiteur·ses du quartier des puces de St Ouen.

Feral Bands, by Nicolas Montgermont and Pali Meursault, uses radio waves, and the environmental and local interferences that they carry, as the only sources for a multichannel sound performance. Relying on the serendipity of electromagnetic pick-up, the resulting concert is completely different every time and in each location it is played.

The performance relies on the radical transformations of the electromagnetic landscape. While today, important parts of the spectrum are redirected toward the massive need for digital bandwidth, we focus on what as been abandoned, such as LW frequencies, which now are left almost completely open to interferences and natural radio waves.

Radioscapes are two sound pieces that propose to listen to complete radio landscapes. The nearly complete radio spectrum has been recorded methodically during weeks and assembled into one sound in two different locations: Malakoff, next to the Parisian ring and Besseuil in an isolated farm.

Listening to these pieces is going through 3GHz to 30 kHz, passing by wifi, cellphones, satellites, radios broadcasts, military coms, and natural waves, all of these composed by their occupied position in the radio spectrum. 

This is an extract of the B side recorded in Le Lieu Dit, Besseuil, France in April 2015.

Long Waves Scan is a performance that uses a radio receiver as the only sound source. The LW frequencies are scanned in real time and sculpted using effects pedals to create an improvisation of radio material depending on the place where it is played.

Before the invention of radio and electromagnetic wave theory, Thomas Watson spent time at night listening to the sounds “produced by the telephone” when no one was connected. Later we would learn that electricity travels through the air and that these sounds are natural radio waves heard through long power lines that act as an antenna.

Long Waves Scan is a practice of listening to radio signals blindly. Nicolas Montgermont performed Long Waves Scan live using only a radio set as the sound source. The frequencies that passed through the site were scanned to identify interesting sounds, and then used with a set of effects to modified their timbre and temporal structure. Over time, the frequencies gradually transform into music using only a radio set as a synthesizer.

Après la fin officielle de la manifestation à Paris, les manifestant·es se font encadrer par un cordon policier qui les conduit au milieu de la circulation, place de la Madeleine.

Désemparé·es par la situation, avec l’impression de s’être fait balader toute la journée en vain et une furieuse envie de produire quelque chose, on occupe spontanément le milieu de la place et on entonne le chant des gilets jaunes : « On est là ! » Répété inlassablement pendant plus de 7 minutes, ce chant agglomère des dizaines d’autres manifestant·es et interrompt la circulation : chouette, on est enfin en manif !
