Room40 label director Lawrence English takes over the final episode of Off The Edge. As an acclaimed field recorder, composer, curator and sonic philosopher, Lawrence is always bringing forth interesting ideas about the nature of listening and our relationship with sound. The mix he's presented is no different - an hour of deep music based on the theme of radio broadcast and its cultural significance throughout its existence. It's as if you're slowly drifting through a smokey, noisy time portal, discovering long dissolved radio waves.

"Over the past 6 months I have maintained something of an odd relationship with radio, especially shortwave. I have started to become interested not just in the idea of this constant flow of sound across so many spectrum, and the fact that the sound travels in ways that are unexpected and is reliant on so many extraneous factors, but also with the idea that it is often being largely undocumented. It exists just for the moment and then is lost in the sweet of new signals. I started to research old radio archival websites and various other outlets that feature recordings made from stations that are long vanished. They hold a certain cultural value and curatorial perspective that are unique to those times and places. This mix is a reflection on music streaming forth, not just from such stations, but also from artists calling on their fading, wavering signals."

Los Angeles-based artist Maral has formed a unique vision of club music, one that embraces her heritage and recontextualizes it for a new audience. Focusing on the interplay between sounds and culture she combines Iranian folk field recordings with raw distorted beats, hoping it will introduce listeners to new ways of perceiving music.Taking the old and making it new.As a DJ, she enjoys exploring music from around the world and showcasing the hidden gems from the past and present. Through her music and involvement in the scene, Maral seeks to both educate and have a positive impact on others."

statement about mix: The concept of this mix is centered around improvisation and the role it’s had in my music making. I was revisiting my first experimental live set that I performed with a friend in college around 2010 in the town of Blacksburg, Virginia, which I’ve shared the full recording in this mix. I’ve grown a lot since that recording but it was a really great moment of locking into a higher realm through improvisation and getting to share that with an audience. I think about that feeling a lot when making my music, and most of the tracks featured in this mix are from me improvising using samples from my Persian classical/traditional collection. I create a world for the samples to play together and become friends, that’s when I know the song is done. At the end of this mix, I included a section from one of my parents' tapes that I brought back from Iran, so the listener can hear an example of the source of my samples, before the samples step into my world.
