snd are Mark Fell and Mat Steel, a pair of Sheffield DJs and musicians whose work has been described as glitch.[1] Naming their project after the extension often used for computer sound files, Fell and Steel are both expert programmers who disdain the usual electronics route of audio software or instruments. During 1998-99, they debuted with the "Tplay" single and Newtables EP on their own .snd label. In July 1999, Mille Plateaux released the debut album, Makesnd Cassette, with Stdiosnd Types following one year later.[2] Their most recent album, Atavism, was released in 2009 by Raster-Noton. Mark Fell and Mat Steel formed SND in 1998 and were quickly placed at the forefront of new digital minimalism. With a series of influential releases on their own label SND and on the now defunct Frankfurt Mille Plateaux, SND pioneered a sound that combined the linear minimalism of Ryoji Ikeda and Oval, with the rhythmic geometry of techno artists such as Thomas Brinkmann or Derrick May. 
SND promote an approach to the organization of sound, space and form that owes more to origami than any time based medium. SND explore the transformation of musical data: their music folds and unfolds, closes and opens, atomizes and regroups; a piece switches to a parallel version of itself, or gradually shifts into its opposite. At some point in 2012, Paul 'Slackk' Lynch tweeted “your scene’s boring, so we’re starting a new one.” It may have been an off-the-cuff remark, but it’s proven remarkably prophetic. 

In 2014, Lynch stands as the gatekeeper for a wave of grime producers breathing life into a genre that, for too long, only had a handful of labels dedicated to its forward motion. After time spent running the pirate radio archive Grimetapes, he released his first single through Numbers in 2010, an EP of rough 4x4 influenced by grime and UK Funky titled Theme.

The next two years saw Lynch become increasingly disillusioned by the dominance of house in UK clubs, and he reacted with ‘Polar Bear’, a single for Unknown to the Unknown that drew from Wiley’s classic sub-zero sound palette. On 2012’s Raw Missions EP, he expanded his sound into one that pays tribute to classic grime (Raw Missions was named after a South London pirate radio station) without simply repeating it, and on 2013’s Minor Triads and Failed Gods EPs, he developed this into a unique sound of his own.

Crucially, in 2013 Lynch also co-founded Boxed, a club night that has become an incubation centre for new grime producers. In less than a year, Boxed had run rooms at Plastic People, Fabric, Birthdays and the Troxy, and has become a crucial hub for some of the UK’s key artists – amongst them Murlo, JT the Goon, Dark0 and Mumdance, and resident DJs Logos, Mr. Mitch and Oil Gang. Lynch’s monthly mixes in 2013 were some of the first to showcase artists like Bloom, Inkke, Strict Face, DJ Milktray, Mike Midnight, Finn and Shriekin, and he was rewarded with radio slots on NTS and Rinse FM.

Palm Tree Fire, Lynch’s debut album, showcases grime’s flexibility away from the club, using a (mostly) 140bpm tempo as a starting point for atmospheric, imaginative music as inspired by Eastern mood pieces as the UK pirate radio culture that was his starting point as Slackk.

In 1972, Sun Ra inked a high-profile deal with ABC / Impulse, bringing his recorded work to the widest audience he’d had to date.  A slew of Saturn back catalog titles and two newly-recorded albums (Astro Black, Pathways To Unknown Worlds) were issued before ABC cancelled the contract, dumped the records into the cut-out bins, and left the unreleased albums to languish.  Now, over four decades later, Roaratorio is proud to offer one of the lost Impulse recordings for the first time.  Sign Of The Myth hails from the same studio session as Pathways, and shares its emphasis on guided improvisations.  With a constantly shifting palette of Moog textures, Ra tosses off a dazzling array of ideas throughout, supported by the usual Arkestra stalwarts; in particular, bassist Ronnie Boykins and drummer Clifford Jarvis are in shining form here, giving shape and solidity to these pieces.  Sign Of The Myth is a welcome augmentation to an especially fertile period from Sun Ra’s time on Earth.

The ninth show in the Cyrk series ‘Pattern Compulsions’ curated for Resonance 104.4FM, is an exclusive mix by multidisciplinary artist Mark Fell.
Mark is a multidisciplinary artist based in Sheffield (UK). After studying experimental film and video art at the local polytechnic he reverted to earlier interests in computational technology, music and synthetic sound. In 1998 he initiated a series of critically acclaimed releases, featuring both collaborative and solo works, on labels including Mille Plateaux, Line, Editions Mego, Raster Noton and Alku.

Although working in electronic and techno music traditions, Mark’s practice has become increasingly informed by non-European musics. This is evident in two recent linked works “Multistablity” and “UL8” which explore a number of unfamiliar timing and tuning systems. Uncut magazine called these “completely mind-blowing” and the Wire said these were “amazing”.

As well as recorded works Mark also produces installation pieces often using multispatial speaker technologies. His work in this area is characterized by ‘non illusion based’ approaches to surround sound environments. This methodology became prominent in a work commissioned by Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary (Vienna) in collaboration with Roc Jiménez de Cisneros in 2008. For this the two artists developed a 48 speaker piece that rejected complex three dimensional panning systems in favour of spatially static synthetic sound. Critically Mark’s work is informed by Western philosophy, especially the writings of Heidegger and Wittgenstein.
