Techno has always been about futurism, but in Russell E.L. Butler's (@russellelbutler) hands it becomes a vehicle for a more inclusive, communal and positive now. The Oakland based producer pairs their stripped back and powerful rhythms with uplifting sound design to make for music that is both defiant yet welcoming to all. They have done so on Left Hand Path, Mister Saturday Night Records and Spectral Sound since 2015, with 2018's 'The Home I'd Build For Me And All My Friends' album being a particularly standout work that showcased Butler's mastery of their machines.

In the studio, Butler is most at home manipulating modular machines and making propulsive techno, but as a DJ they expire wider sonic terrain. That's demonstrated on this week's mix, which begins with dystopian atmospheres and heavy rhythms that eventually break out into jerking EBM, bleak cold wave and mechanical house sounds. It's a brilliantly taught and tense selection with a careful smattering of human vocals that keeps it rooted in an approachable realism.

Richii Tomoe is a seasoned music lover who’s no stranger to the rodeo when it comes to international club scenes. Starting out as a party promoter in Fukuoka, Richii has led a global\nomadic lifestyle spanning from Japan to Australia and most recently Berlin, allowing her to rack up a considerable portfolio of dancefloor miles in different scenes. Richii’s unique sense of club experience has inevitably guided her towards the DJ booth, debuting throughout various events this past summer, most notably the much spoken about “Speedy Boarding” raves (involuntarily hosted by Elon Musk on Tesla grounds) along with the Sound Metaphors Summer party at Oxi Garden. As a new member to the Sound Metaphors family, we’re honored to bring you one of her recorded mixes. We hope this helps illustrate the exquisite flavors of Richii’s latest DJ pursuits.

We have a new vinyl for you, which will be sold exclusively at Nachtiville for the first time. Joining us on NV02 are three wonderful producers who have provided us with three very different tracks that will work wonderfully on any stage - Bambounou, Carista and Elias Mazian!

Elias Mazian is a long friend of Nachti and so it was a no-brainer to let him open the record with "Check 1 2". It's pumping, it's for the dance floor, it's for you and your friends! The mood switch halfway through the track guarantees that this track could become an instant hit at the Wave Cave.

Carista is still a newcomer, at least as a producer, which is why we are particularly happy that we were able to win her for our compilation. The title "Silk" likely refers to the shimmering pads, which are accompanied by playful melodies and a lighthearted arrangement. Think of 90s Nu Groove, but happier.

Not only is Bambounou everyone's darling on the internet, he's also a brilliant crafter of designer techno. "Deep Down Ibeil" is made up of all kinds of distorted noises, pounding sub frequencies and an overall eerie mood.
