This is an interview with Professor Adam Talib, assistant professor in the Department of Arab and Islamic Civilzations.

For this interview, I spoke to Professor Heba Farid, professor in the Department of Arts here at the American University in Cairo, to tell me a bit more about photography and representation in Egypt in the 1970's till about 2000.

This is a period that saw a rapid decline in studio photography in Egypt, as cameras became better and more available to the public.

When We Left Studios Behind :: A Promo

For this interview I spoke to Habiba El Gendy, a junior at the American University in Cairo who studies graphic design and has been taking photographs ever since her early teens, to tell me a bit more about her passion for photography, Instagram and revolutions image-making in Egypt.

For my third and final interview, I sat down with Professor Paul Geday, visual artist, publisher and curator of the Studio Viennoise exhibition, an exhibit he worked on with Professor Heba Farid that chronicled Egyptian photography until the 1970s. He spoke to me about Armenian photographer Van Leo, photography in Egypt during the Second World War, and even how he sees the Egyptian revolution has changed photography.

From the 1930's all the way till the mid 70s, Egypt hosted a number of boisterous and lively studio photographers who eternalized the classical faces of Egypt.

Egypt Through the Lens: From Van Leo to Instagram

For this feature, I sat down with Omar ElKafrawy, anthropology student at AUC and President of Heya - the Feminist Initiative. We discussed Heya's latest event, a series of talks by professors and students that shed light on issues of gender, sexuality and the law in Egypt.  We also talked about feminism, privilege and what it's like being a male at the helm of an initiative stereotypically typified as 'female'.

Up Close & Personal with Heya President Omar ElKafrawy

Alia El Saady is an AUC graduate who made the brave decision to challenge gender norms and cut her hair far shorter than the Egyptian 'norm'. Since, she's experienced harassment, bullying and confusion but has found a way to deal with it all by channeling her creative energies and producing a number of slam poetry clips on her Facebook page. 
Her clips have been met with wide support by AUC students and faculty alike and she's gone on to perform her works at a campus event and a class themed around feminism. 
I spoke to Alia about her experiences with harassment, reactions of family and friends and why her hair is, in fact, a big deal.
