N.18 w/ @Cobeia (@ecoutesauvert) 11-05-23 / 18:30 - 20 in the Museum foyer

I was invited to do a DJ set at the wonderful Museum of Ethnology in Geneva (MEG) using their huge record archives. 💫  

On that day, I was given access to dig in a Collection that belonged to Marco Botta, a foreign affairs Swiss diplomat who accumulated records (and newspapers) from all his trips around the World. After his death, his family gave the vast Collection to the MEG. It contains folklore and modern music from all over the world up to the 80s. Several huge shelves of vinyl from South America, Europe, Oceania, Africa... subdivided by countries. Around 5000 records. Most in pristine condition. 

With the little time at my disposal (4 hours), I decided to focus on Africa, because of my link to it, my extensive travels around North and East Africa, my reading about the forging of the Portuguese First Global Empire circumventing Africa, the many documentaries about the continent I saw, and my love for its many cultures & music. 😊

Between 2 and 6 PM, I searched through the collection, could hear the music and make a selection. Right after, I played a 1 hour and a half set with the records in public. The set was recorded, filmed & broadcasted on WAV33.

I had 2 turntables and a Pioneer mixer at my disposal. I created spontaneously a mixed set, overlapping tunes and using effects, especially in the first half hour which features more tribalistic music and sounds at times otherworldly.   

I started with an imaginary Ancient Egypt track from a record of a Tutankhamun exhibition in Seattle from 1976, followed by an oud song from the Ottoman Period era by a well-known Egyptian Musician. Then went into Tuareg incursions, tribalistic music, Portuguese colonies (Cabo Verde, Angola...), circumvolution of Africa passing the Cape of Good Hope, all the way to the other side through the various lands (South Africa, Mozambique, Kenya, Ethiopia...) and Islands of the coast of Africa (Maurice, Comoros, Seychelles...) in the Indian Ocean as far as La Reunion and Zanzibar.

Réveil Archives Sonores #18: @Cobeia

For a 1h30 set, the guest artists take us on a musical journey through their personal selection of sound archives.

Cobeia is a DJ and record collector from Geneva. He is also the curator/orga of Ecoutes au vert (EAV), a series of musical events that has been running since 2006. Over the years, he has organised many concerts and evenings of electro-acoustic, African, No Wave, Electronic, Disco and Experimental music, with talented local and international artists.

Curious to explore a wide range of styles, he unearths gems through long digging sessions. Traditional and modern African music, Outernational, Jazz, Afro-Funk, Post Punk, Disco, Cosmic, Italo, Wave, Electronic, Ambient, Experimental... are just some of the genres he loves. Music that often features a mix of instruments, synths and drum machines, with an analogue sound in a computerised world ;)

Cobeia has mixed at venues & festivals in Geneva, Switzerland, Berlin, Thailand and Vietnam.

A few years ago, with Ecoutes au vert, he organised a concert by the traditional Kenyan group Ogoya Nengo & the Dodo Women's Choir Group in collaboration with the MEG.

The records played during this DJ set come from the Marco Botta collection, acquired by MEG in 2011. The collection comprises almost 5,000 LPs (33rpm), released on a multitude of labels from around the world.

While PHONON's main interest lies in the early House sounds that once lit up Chicago and New York, he’s also always on the hunt for lesser-known records of different (brain-)danceable genres. 

This mix is the result of amazing hours @jan-abekrfcce spent in Japanese record shops during which Phonon mainly rummaged through boxes of domestic productions from the 80s and 90s.

Here some words from him, MFI / EAV asked him to share:

"I grew up in Singen (southwest Germany near the Swiss border) to the sounds of the Flamenco and Brazilian Guitar as well as Jazz - my father was a guitar and music teacher. I learned to play the trumpet and the drums (nowadays I turn to Synths and Drum machines.)  I have a thing for synth - Early Roland Pad sounds are my favorites.

In the context of music I like to research and understand historical contexts and roots and I try to translate that into my mixes. I started my collection with late 1980s House Music, loads of which I found when I studied & lived in NYC. 

I also lived in Milan for some years and return to Italy more than once a year. After that, I was in Leipzig. When traveling, I always try to find and bring back some special records, which might not be easily found back home."

Phonon lives nowadays in Berlin since 2019, although he travels and works remotely a lot. He has put up nights and DJed at Paloma, Beate Uwe and Bars. He also plays in Freiburg, Konstanz and countries where he spends time traveling/working remotely like in Italy, the US and Japan.

Mix of the Week #525: Ron From Yoga - Enjoyable Moments

The idea behind this piece was to use only sounds produced by the Spree System modular synthesizer and arrange them in a D.A.W. (Ableton Live 8) in order to create an organic and emotional ambient/drone composition, which somehow aims to condense the birth, life and death of a human being in its 5-minute duration.
All sounds are recorded from the Spree System modular synthesizer going through an Eventide ultra harmonizer in two sessions taking place in December 2014, except for one sustained chord clearly heard around 3:30 until the end of the piece, which was recorded from a Yamaha DX7 synthesizer.

Jeff Mills is one of the biggest names in techno. Hailing from Detroit, he was a founding member of the noted label Underground Resistance before moving to NY in 1992 to pursue a solo career. Famed for his stripped-down, pounding industrial DJ sets, Mills plays regularly in London at his Lost club nights. Mills' music fuses acid and industrial techno with the typically sparse hardcore of Detroit. His releases include two full-length volumes of 'Waveform Transmissions' (Tresor), a live album and rarities collection for the British label React, and the first album in a new contract with Sony Japan, as well as a handful of 12-inch EPs on Axis and several collaborations with Robert Hood on his M-Plant label. In 2000, Mills scored a new soundtrack for Fritz Lang's 'Metropolis'.
