Two rare albums of the 1990s in which Thione Seck looks backwards with re-recordings of tracks he'd originally laid in the early 80s, yet also forwards with early versions of songs that would later feature in albums such as 'Orientissime'.

The shared title 'Demb', is the Wolof for “yesterday” and with prominent sabar percussion, the music does look back to that which accompanied the traditional ceremonies of Thione's youth. On the other hand it is as fresh, unadulterated and compelling as if yesterday is when it was recorded.

Definitely worth investigating.
