Too Electric (Yeah Yeah Yeah)

There are so many moments around the making of this song that drive home the idea of “Keeper”. 

I met Nick Pingree (Eau Noir) on a sunny day in Echo Park, set up for a session without any prior introduction or background. I sat nervously, and excitedly, in his bright studio as he asked me to play him some of my music. I jumped around songs on my Dropbox folder until I decided to dive into the most intimate of my creative spaces – my voice memos. 

As soon as I played “Keeper” – a smooth yet haunting vocal over a simple acoustic bass line, Nick nodded in approval. This was the one.
Mirroring the very nature of the song’s creation, I laid down the lead vocals and acoustic foundation, and layered on top all the harmonies that resonated with us. Two hours later, Nick said he had it from there. 

“That’s it?” I asked, without any sense of where the production would go, and what the final song would be like. I put my trust in Nick’s abilities, and the sense of familiarity with each other that we had developed over the course of our session. 

A day later, “Keeper” arrived in my inbox. Exactly as I had imagined it. 

I’m excited to share this song, and hope you’ll find it a keeper as well.

Being noticed by Billboard’s Editorial Director after uploading a debut song on Soundcloud isn’t an everyday thing for an independent artist, but when you combine a distinctly ethereal and powerful voice with visual lyrics that instantly pull you in — it makes perfect sense. Hailing from Washington, D.C., Naïmah has been unbounded by musical genres from the start. With a seemingly effortless approach and organic/electronic arrangements, her style pays homage to a long legacy of Black musicians in country, rock, soul, and pop music. Fittingly, her music was featured on Beats by Dr. Dre’s “Flowers for Black Women” on Apple Music alongside powerhouse artists like Nina Simone, Whitney Houston, Lauryn Hill, and Solange. Her music has also been featured in the CW’s “Batwoman” and “Kung Fu”, and on numerous Spotify editorial playlists showcasing pop, indie, and emerging music around the world.

In 2016 she was a winner in the International Songwriting Competition and in 2022 she made the semi-finals. Among a long track record of performances, she has performed for Stevie Wonder and was an invited guest to the White House during President Obama’s administration. 

Her influences range from the classic (Sam Cooke, Fleetwood Mac, Elliott Smith) to the current (Cautious Clay, Japanese Breakfast, Phoebe Bridgers).
