This last year has been difficult for most of us. As if we were all locked-in into the same shitty VR game. Besides the repercussion of the pandemic, a bunch of personal conflicts came to the surface these last months and also significantly impacted my music preference and thus my music experience.  

Since club culture has basically ceased to exist, it made way to explore untouched and previously touched music genres and artists. This 1-hour mix for Refuge WorldWide reflects all of the above. A sonic journey through pain, suffering, ups and downs, but primarily an hour filled with a renewed fresh breath of air that was long overdue. So enjoy a different face of mine xxx Nathan Kofi

"People have been telling me I'm a 'psychedelic' and 'emotional' selector lately, so I wanted to explore that idea here. I usually try to weave in all sorts of genres, moods and tempos into a set, but for this one I left my usual drama behind: it's 90 minutes from one take of pure feelings, featuring a lot of current releases I've been playing out recently."

Every now and then a DM slides into your inbox and it feels like fate. Earlier this year, right around the time FMHQ had been hammering DJ Voices' exceptional Goodroom mix, one of our punters messaged saying "my friend is an excellent DJ from NYC and she's in the UK during FM, can I intro you?" Can you guess who it was?

A member of Brooklyn's Working Women collective, New York’s DJ Voices was a booker at Sisters BKLYN for four years before starting her career behind the decks in 2015. Since then she’s rapidly made in-roads in NYC and beyond, with Fact, Pitchfork and Resident Advisor all hitting her up for mixes. You can hear her traverse a course through house, broken techno, modern club sounds at her residency at Nowadays NYC or on her Blue Enough on Noods Radio show.

For FM041, DJ Voices has but us together something more-ish. No sooner had we finished listening to this mix and we stuck it on again. And again. It's hypnotic. We can't wait to have her start proceedings on the Friday night in the main tent with Avalon Emerson, Ben UFO and Or:la.

Utrecht: We've returned to one of our favourite Dutch venues, WAS, for another all-nighter. First up on the broadcast is Nous'klaer Audio star Konduku.

Cindy Li, better known as Ciel is a key DJ, producer, promoter and activist from Toronto, Canada. One of the most deeply respected breakouts of recent years. Since 2015, Li has been promoting dance music in the city, running various nights like Work In Progress and It’s Not U It’s Me. She was in music way before, working on a college radio station called CFRC-FM, where she adept in her ways and skills as a DJ. Focused on moving up the local scene in Toronto, to leave a bigger imprint and recognition as in Canada as beyond. “Think global, act local” mantra would describe her at its best. She's a long-time resident at Bambi's & a member of Discwoman. She released her first EP on Peach Discs in 2017 and followed up with a 4 tracker on Coastal Haze, called Hundred Flowers. In 2019, Ciel has established her own label alongside friends Daniel 58 and Yohei S, called Parallel Minds. All of that has made Ciel one of the most deeply respected breakouts of recent years. We, to put it simply just love her sound that blends from house to electro and techno, with merging breaks, busting bassline and atmospheric synths with loads of percussive sounds. Enjoy!

here's someone we should all be thankful for <3 this is a person who's done so much for the american and global grassroots dance movement, through programming incredibly vital spaces like everyone's fav Hot Mass in Pittsburgh (where Lauren also holds a residency) to the widely appreciated New Forms festival. thing is it doesn't stop in this curatorial generosity, because Boo Lean aka Lauren Goshinski is also the sickest of DJs, naturally vibing between sonic schools to a mesmerizing result. i'm so happy naive snatched this mix, a recent recording that was up for grabs and we took this chance pronto. of course it paid off in a major way: from music by lisbon king n***a fox to icons like Loraine James, India Jordan, bergsonist and more (and even my own track for future ethics *blushes* sped-up + beautifully re-contextualized) - this is a skillful ride through some of the most exciting corners of our little big dancey universe.

I'm grateful for the adventure of producing this Bunker mix––a collage of polyrhythmic explorations from around the world that point to the pursuit of all rhythms slinky, freaked-out, and asymmetrical. I wanted to sculpt these selections into new forms by carving and collaging heavily, so you’ll hear up to four channels playing at the time. The hidden potential in a wild combination is what keeps me curious, and the glue that holds this web together. These zones have kept me moving while finishing Suggested Forms (out Feb 14th on Human Pitch) and Temporary Music by my collaborative project Asa Tone on Leaving Records.
