Folks, grab a seat because mother is back! Well, technically Violet’s just released a whole album on naivety - go check it out btw - but this will be her first naive solo EP since “Togetherness” exploded and became the ubiquitous dancefloor track we all know and love. 

On “Espírito” she leaves behind any trace of contemplative jungle and house hybridification to concoct a commanding blend of leftfield Detroit techno sonics and dramatic NYC tribal house. The A-side is a perfect example of this fiery marriage of Sound Factory hard-house beats and glass-like pointillisms that evoke Terrence Dixon and other Midwest experimentalists. 

On the flip side, “Psyche” is a more abstract and somewhat intimate juxtaposition of nervous energy, off-kilter breakbeats and wide-eyed futuristic optimism; a bit as if The Black Dog released their first demos on Cómeme in 2015. 

On the remix we have none other than the Motherbeat founder, High Priestess of the decks and naive royalty Eris Drew, who takes the celestial clouds of spiritual Love from the original and layers them over slick but super-satisfyingly complex beats and textures, exploding into moments of pure lightness and sisterly dancefloor expansion.

London producer Slacker’s rise has been steady. First announcing himself to the scene with the flurry of wonderful SoundCloud uploads, the producer has since released on Lobster Theremin and his own co-owned Pseudonym Records, winning critical acclaim from publications such as Resident Advisor and Ransom Note, and support from fellow exciting up-and-comers such as Otik (on Midland’s InterGraded label) and tastemakers such as Berlin based selector CCL.

The title track is a hard cut of malfunctioning electro; frantic, screwface energy designed for small spaces with no windows, while ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ is a brooding, chugging cut of psychedelic dub-techno; something you might have heard Andrew Weatherall or David Holmes playing in the nineties. 

‘Mezcal’ sees the artist venture into newer, faster-paced territories as Slacker incorporates a Chicago juke aesthetic; sensationally bouncy, incredibly fun and captivatingly energetic, with just enough electro flavour for those who lack the ability to footwork to continue to dance. 

Rounding off the release is the most quintessential Slacker track on there - ‘Prototype’ - a cut of acid dipped, in-your-face electro; raw and uncompromising.

Also featuring on the record is digi-only track ‘Sacrifice of the Self’.

Written and produced by a close friend to the Mantissa family, this unnamed and elusive artist has helped us launch the label with a bang with three club focused, space inspired tracks designed to decimate a dancefloor or provide the soundtrack to an afters.

Space Cadet opens the extraterrestrial affair, weaving from acoustic elements to electronic and eclectic synth lines. The A side ends with Frozen Bounce, a wobbly number, woven together with quick cuts and jerky elements. U10A, the most structured of a complex affair is a warming club tool perfect for both, beginning and finishing an evening. It's remix is similarly suitable for any party specific scenario, produced by the infamously talented artist Ciel.

In "Apophenia (AHJU remix)" AHJU plays with classic 90's UK breakbeat, with piercing high-synth stabs reminiscent of Sydney's vivacious hardstyle underground rave and party scene pre-lockdown. She also hones in on the distorted vocal chops of the o.g. track, moulding them into a high energy dance number ready for dance floors across Aus this coming Summer.

With a fair amount of pride, Warning presents the debut EP of emerging artist JCow. Four fresh cuts that will stand the test of time. Opening with high energetic roller Magma on the A side, accompanied by Purity of Spirit, an uplifting basement Rave anthem. On the flip things get more twisted with Groove Ryder, a melange of funky Breakz, Trance and Trip-Hop. The Acid Fiend Mix of formerly digitally released Rave Patrol is completing this record with an overboarding composition of drums and JCow’s own guitar.

Polyrhythmic percussion taken from the Glasgow duo's debut solo LP on Hong Kong-based imprint 宀 or 'Mihn'.

The trees taunted the wind, swaying sarcastically as it did everything in its power to dismantle them. Their underbellies exposed, the leaves stood erect and looked like little tongues sticking out. This is a battle they'd fought many times before and today it came right on cue. This time they would lose a few troops but their roots would maintain solid so as to prove their endurance. Now, each branch is a trophy.

'Hypopompic' is taken from General Ludd's third release on a Hong Kong label. The eponymously titled album comes four years after their last solo release on Rub A Dub records and continues the duo's focus on razor-sharp sound design and textural complexity. With an otherworldly remix from Shanghai's Laughing Ears, the album leaves little time for respite with 9 hard-hitting tracks exploring the abstraction of rhythm and genre.

The track takes its rhythm from the rattle of two complex drum patterns which compete from either side of surface level: one sharper and more tangible and the other submerged in water, doused in reverb. Delivering themselves at full force in a competitive yet playful exchange, their dialogue makes for incredible complexity and dynamism and is an irresistible tease of what to expect of the full release early next month.

Gunai/Kunai & Yorta Yorta artist dj pgz makes his Butter Sessions debut with a killer 2-track EP The Dance / Hypnotic Suburbs.

dj pgz makes his affinity for the sounds of the underground known in A-side track “The Dance”, where he masterfully commands a dark miasma of rolling bass and percussion. As per the title, “The Dance” is made for raging dancefloors and the relationships you make along the way, following in trajectory from his last release “Unknown at Night” (Pure space compilation - PROXIMITY ||). As the track blossoms into a frenzy of syncopated kick drum programming, rolling trap hi-hats and trusty claps, it’s cognizant how dj pgz’s experience drumming from the age of 13 has lent itself to his already developed idiosyncratic sound in electronic music production.

“I want folks to feel like this music is something familiar and new at the same time. I want them to enjoy it, but also if they don't have an enjoyable experience, that's ok too. At the center of it all, I want to create something that has a groove and makes folks really keen to move around.”

In “Hypnotic Suburbs” dj pgz explores new avenues, starting with an evocative use of space that transforms into beloved drum and bass. The sonic mold is pieced together with high-pitch synth melodies and rubbery bass lines, aided by local rapper Teether’s vocals, which add an unbeatable live dimension you simply can’t beat.

“Features with people in my community is what making music is all about. I'm always interested in creating something together, and if folks I want to collaborate with enjoy what I do, then that's better than the release to me. When I took this joint to Corey it was still half an idea and he helped me with getting this track over the line instrumentally with arrangement, sounds, mix and energy. Corey was fresh to collaborate with, he taught me some secret techniques too which I'll hope to pull out for future releases”.
