"To me, celebrating Women’s History Month was more about honoring the woman that I am becoming and paying homage to the women of influenced. In order to do that, I had to dig into what embodied the women I have aspired to be and the reasoning behind that.

I wanted to highlight songs that took me through a specific journey of my womanhood, whilst challenging and bring awareness to a few ideas that women, including myself, are constantly faced with such as: compromise, sexism, sexuality, vulnerability power, perception and success.

Drunk At Vogue played our second year running at the Castell Gardens at the majestic Festival No. 6. I played mainly a good-time disco set with a little nod to the main stage headliners from both the 2013 and 2014 festival line-up...

Created for 'What IS She Wearing?' at Manchester Art Gallery 3rd March 2016. This drone played at full volume in Gallery 2 for the duration of the evening. At one point Broadside Balladress Jennifer Reid performed ballads over it. It then played on.

What IS She Wearing? launched the Wonder Women festival of events and was to celebrate International Women's Day in Manchester. 

What IS SheWearing?
From the Suffragettes to Red Lipstick Day, the Slut Walks and the Pussy Riots to butch and drag, women have long utilised that which is used to restrict them; to strive for freedom and an identity on their own terms. Manchester’s 2016 International Women’s Day theme is ‘Women’s Voices’, and through intersectional feminist art, performance, film, interventions and debate we explore how women have used style to speak volumes, and to see what liberation and liability can come from sartorial expressions of identity. 

Drone:
My drone piece for What IS She Wearing? is made up of many interviews, accounts and excerpts of women speaking, shouting and droning on about themselves, their style and how that style has both given them freedom and fury within a society that does not want them within it, at least not as they themselves want to be.

Within music, the drone is a constant. Most musical cultures and traditions feature a drone aspect somewhere within it’s musical canon. It is both harmonic and discordant. It sits beneath the rest giving no rest whatsoever to the ears, but serving to hold the lot in a tightly fraught position of perfection and persistence. It is painful, difficult, addictive and continuous. It reminds me of everything general society does not want to think of, that is there. It also makes me more than a little hypnotised.

Thinking of women and women’s voices, thinking of women and what women wear. We hear lots said about all of these things. Women should be seen and not heard. When women are seen they should conform. They should perform. They should empower themselves in a manner deemed sexually satisfying to a white, western, heteronormative patriarchal society. And then we can judge them. The one you’d marry. The one you’d fuck. The one you would never introduce to your mother. The one who was asking for it. The one who was frigid. Too straight. Too nice. Too nasty. Smile, it might never happen. Hey gorgeous. Fuck you then you bitch! She’s well up for it. She’s well up herself. Who does she think she is? What IS She Wearing?

Catchphrases that when recounted make women suitably sound more than a little irrational. All said by men, to women, about women. About how they act. About what they wear!

Drones are powerful. Drones are loud. Drones are constant. This drone is made up of a hundred angry women’s voices all united together to make one almighty din! “Of all harmonic devices, it [a drone] is not only the simplest, but probably also the most fertile.” Like not keeping your mouth shut. Ever! Every silence speaks consent so let’s stop consenting to shit we do not agree with. Keep on opposing, disrupting, altering and tapping at that wall. Keep on creating, combining and collaborating till we knock it down. Keep on shouting, saying, harping on. This drone is a din, a collaboration of solidarity, a collection of a thousand voices spoken in discordant harmony. It’s quite simple, but life changing. One voice, many voices. A thousand whispers make one hell of a racket! Fuck me I want to shout the hell out of this place! If there’s a whisper in you, or a yell, let it go. Let’s drone on together. The frequency will dislodge the foundations. The sound waves will send the structure tumbling down!
