This is a  60 minute soundscape recorded for a live multi-media dance/theatre performance, USHER, created as an experimental adjunct to an extensive research study, 'A Corpse Desperately Standing: The Influences of Literature on Hijikata Tatsumi's Ankoku Buto'.

The USHER project was inspired by a re-reading of Edgar Allan Poe's, 'The Fall of the House of Usher', and is informed, throughout, by Hijikata's seminal work. As with Ankoku Buto's blending of seemingly incongruous elements, the USHER soundscape is an admixture of acoustic and classical instrumentation, modified speech and vocals. It is an interweaving and a disjunction of melody, rhythmic harmony, primal sound, vocables, discord and effects, wherein the human voice and breath is used for its sonancy, as an instrument amongst other instruments. In certain places, extracts from the USHER Performance Text and Poe's ballad 'The Haunted Palace' are whispered, with the articulation of the words vanishing into inaudibility. Selected pre-recorded material from Sopor Aeternus 'The Inexperienced Spiral Traveller' album (1996) was re-worked with additional instrumentation and voice, added to new compositions, interludes, and the whole being arranged in conformation with the USHER Performance Text. Work on this soundscape was done in collaboration with the gifted Lorenz Penkler. Lorenz was born in South Africa, educated in France, and at the time of our meeting, was studying for a B.A. Hons Degree in Music as I was completing my Masters.

NURSERY CRYMES DOLLY BAND, or NC DOLLY BAND,  is a unique punky rock band whose members are dolls rather than humans.  Within a year of their creation a few of the dolls in the cellar workshop began to exhibit a love for music. During the unearthly hours, when all good people were asleep, they would rummage in boxes and draw bottoms to make instruments from scrap materials found, and practice singing and playing.  During the later months of 2012  and the beginning of 2013, these little dolls sneaked out of the workroom, out of the flat, out of the town, out of the country and frequented a secret studio in a mysterious land far away.  It is now mid March. The NC Dolly Band is launched and here are the fruits of their labour for your listening pleasure. Don't expect 'sweet' from these little ones! Creating music made these dolls forget heir pain and soothed their troubled spirits!
