في بيروت تعلم ربيع أبو خليل عزف العود، وخرج ملحنا من الكونسرفتوار ليتجه إلى ألمانيا هربا من الحرب الأهلية اللبنانية، لينشط ذو البضع وخمسين عاما موسيقيا، وينضم لإحدى الفرق الألمانية، ويحقق تقدما سريعا جعلته ينفصل ليقدم موسيقاه الخاصة، دامجا الموسيقى العربية بالكلاسيكية الأوربية بالجاز والروك الأمريكي .
يحسب لأبو خليل أنه أوائل من أطلق عليهم لقب "موسيقي عالم" (world music) وذلك قبل أن تصبح الكلمة تصنيفا موسيقيا منفصلا .
يُتهم أبو خليل بأنهم يقوم بتمييع الموسيقى العربية بمزجه لها بالموسيقى الغربية، فيما يرد بأن موسيقى اليوم ما هي إلا نتاج لثورته الموسيقية هو بالأمس.
