Like virtually all of my work, SceneBox is a melding and dissolving of digital and analog technologies. It expands upon and re-imagines perceptual dissonances. The hypnotic quality that the rhythmic motion of the train generates, the imagined flickering light of the sun through the trees, and the barely overheard conversations of the other passengers are all included in this work.

SceneBox

An early audio recording medium, wax cylinder recordings were the first commercially produced sound recordings. They create a snapshot of the daily life of those ‘early adopters’ in the decades around the turn of the 20th century, who recorded the small details of their day with what was, during its time, the newest technology. Anonymous sound recordings from wax cylinders comprise a primary part of AboundBox.

AboundBox

In this piece, theoretical physicist Leonard Susskind asks us to imagine there’s a little hole in the side of the box,(which in his talk represents the universe). It uses recording technologies to attempt to connect with people in another time, in another place. Sounds seep from one piece to another, drawing connections between the works. Like print-through, (which happens when magnetic audiotape is wound too tightly), thoughts, memories, feelings, and ideas seem to transfer from one layer of time to another.
