Rebirth

Nodding Out on the Bandstand

The year was 2007. Certain genres were thriving, certain genres were diminishing, but, all the while, musical horizons were broadening. This started as a "project". Nothing more, nothing less, and turned into a beautiful conundrum. NPN began as an "escape", if you will, from musical borders. Genres, while pushing boundaries, became constrictive and limiting. Miles Davis Ricketts and Michael Preston Scott decided to start a project that pushed every creative limit and dashed away any second thought of; "CAN we do this right here?". Thus, Nancy Plays Nurse was born. Michael had to move away shortly after the birth of NPN and Miles was left alone with a surprisingly large responsibility. He continued, in his mother's garage on an outdated laptop recording "versions" of the songs playing in his head as best he could, resulting in "The Clouds Are Leaking Marbles ep." AKA "The Calm". Months went by and songs were written. The same faithful, yet not entirely reliable laptop was given another task of recording a second ep titled "The Dusty State ep". Named after the state of Nevada and it's unrealistically strange amount of dust. The first two ep's created sloppy yet groovy visuals and minimal local hype but a "Cult Following" of sorts did begin to form. It would be a few years before any sort of "Band" took place, but take place it did. Christian Maine began playing bass with Ricketts and the two were just passing time, playing songs written long before with no real intention of playing shows or developing further. David Miller came into the picture shortly thereafter with a jazzy, freestyle way of drumming that fit beautifully. Carson Cessna had been in and out of the picture showing enthusiasm and an ear for creativity that helped the band become an actual reality. A fortunate neighbor turned out to be another compatible addition with a lot more flare than anyone anticipated. His name was Dustin, and he played a mean violin. This lineup lasted a good 2 years or so. Wonderfully intense shows, (some including Michael from the beginning), and lots of hard and soft drugs. There was a falling out between band members, (as there almost always is), and NPN became a 2 piece band. Miles and David. A few shows were played, (Jesse Ramos and Robert Marquis were thrown into the mix playing percussion), and Nancy found a way to survive. 
AGAIN a falling out: 
Miles (the creator of the musical monster) is left alone again. Daylan Rhea comes along. Playing drums like a jazzy little fucker outta hell and showcasing an absolute understanding of all things music. Structure and instruments alike, this dude just gets it. A partnership is woven. Jen Scaffidi, the incredibly talented songwriter with a voice from the gods, (if they were to lighten up and party hard), joins to play bass. Jen recorded Miles' first emo album when he was just 14, and felt excited and strange about the age difference(almost 10 years) at the time of the collaboration, but was always supportive and knew something would happen eventually once he lost his virginity and stopped whining so goddamn much. A three piece band was tearing up the town(s). Eventually, Jim Gustafson, one of the most universally talented guitarists (maybe EVER)offers to join up. Jessica Calderon and a youngster(at the time) named Conor join to play dueling trumpets and all is funky, all is groovy, all is messy and well. Long story less long, people grow, people drift apart, people move, and certain people can't handle divorce. The band breaks up. Almost 7 long years later, we're back where we started and Miles Davis Ricketts is recording the long "Awaited?" full-length album, once again playing everything on his own. Give this a chance. In a world of perfected, polished, repetitious, horse manure, Nancy Plays Nurse is reborn in all of her weird, sloppy, groovy, elongated glory. Enjoy, Nerds.
