Veteran Jamaican deejay Tippa Lee returns to the fold with a playful twist on the classic love song, professing his adoration for sweet reggae music and all it's provided him. 

As per usual, the enigmatic Naram is on riddim duties with a retro-futuristic piece of rub-a-dub mixing live Simmons drums, acoustic piano and a menagerie of colourful synths.

Paired with a stripped back dub version, mixed to tape, and mastered for full effect by New Zealand’s Downbeat Mastering, this is another essential 45 from the Red Robin camp.

From the remote township of Te Mata, in the rugged hills of New Zealand, comes a new imprint following in the tradition of mid-80s rub-a-dub from an often overlooked corner of dancehall culture.

The brainchild of local farmer and radio personality Red Robin – alongside the deadly production  duo Naram and Art – the first 12” features two heavy-like-lead riddims with discomix cuts from four 
unsung heroes of the 80s with conscious, street-level lyrics.

Side A finds legendary singer Winston ‘Midnight Riders’ Powell rise again on a synth-infused piece of classic rub-a-dub. Despite being his first release in decades, he delivers a cutting edge vocal from his Kingston 9 borough about life Outta Road in the Jamaican capital. He then crosses live to special agent Speng Bond for a deejay report on the current state of Britain in Dread Outta Road.

With a more uptempo riddim, the flipside sees Toronto-based 80s star Steve Knight fire some timely shots at corrupt politicians with Dem a Fraud before Los Angeles-based MC Tippa Lee comes correct 
with a self-affirming deejay cut on Salute the Veteran.

Both sides are served with one-away dub mixes from Naram and added textural touches from disrupt and expert mastering by Pole. 

Six cuts on one record, strictly limited pressings.

New Zealand’s finest purveyors of rub-a-dub music, Red Robin Records, are back again with another compelling discomix 45 – hot on the heels of their debut Outta Road 12”, released earlier this year.

Having sold the flock sheep he reared over the New Zealand winter, Red Robin (a farmer by trade) has raised enough funds to summon an impressive cast of veteran singers and deejays to ride two original riddims from his label cohort Naram.

A1 sees the great Midnight Riders return with a tune called Bobby was a Gangster – a cautionary tale for all wannabe bad boys on a synth-heavy piece of rub-a-dub. On Part two the 85 Style veteran General Jah Mikey comes down gruff with a bubbling deejay cut called Galang Selector.

On the flip, the versatile General Jah Mikey reappears as a singer for Ravers Party. His velvet tones contrast nicely against the growling bassline of another deadly Naram riddim. Ragamuffin Junior Cat then jacks it up for Ram Dance Posse – an unbroken flow of lyrics that few deejays on the planet today could test today.

Mastered to tape by Pole for maximum sonic niceness, this swag of six tunes won’t last long. So act fast to avoid disappointment.

An unexpected, compact addition to the label, this limited edition 7" features the evergreen deejay talents of Red Robin's good buddy Tippa Lee riding a riddim built by Naram whilst in hiding in Mexico. The vocal was recorded in a dodgy motel room in Los Angeles using a Coca Cola bottle as a mic stand and mixed at the back of a tobacco shop in Melbourne. No bells, whistles nor bullshit - just raw digital dancehall.

Featuring two ‘new’ veteran artistes, as well as a couple of more familiar collaborators, RR03 is bound to be another highly-collectable edition to their growing catalog.

Side A opens with Midnight Riders on a classic piece of Naram digi roots – this time lamenting the quick temper of his 'Jealous Woman' in the dance. However there’s two sides to every coin, so part two sees legendary UK sheejay Ranking Ann construct a compelling argument that it’s the 'Jealous Man' who presents the bigger problem!

On the flip Naram explores an  earlier rub-a-dub sound, giving a solid foundation for roots icon Earl Cunningham to issue a decree against gun violence on 'War in the City'. Raggamuffin Junior Cat then hammers home the message with a relentlessly militant deejay cut, 'Stand Tall Ghetto Youth'.

As per usual, both sides feature killer versions from Naram and have been carefully mastered to tape by Pole. And, also as usual, they’re strictly limited pressings - so don’t sleep.

The second edition of the Red Robin 7” series sees the Kiwi rub-a-dub doyens team up with their long-time friend from Kampala, Uganda, SK Simeon – for a catchy new single called Dem Wanna be my Friend.

Riding a high-octane TR 707-driven riddim, the Ugandan Firestarter provides an unusual yet compelling vocal performance. Switching up styles like a stripper on speed, he ranges from falsetto crooning to ruffneck deejaying to spoken word preaching to deliver a sermon on the dangers of fickle, fair-weather friends.

As per usual, this limited edition musical disc features a stripped-back dub on the flip, courtesy of Naram. Mastered to tape by Pole for maximum impact in the dance.

The third Red Robin 7” finds the veteran Tippa Lee in fine form, crooning and chatting in a suffrah’s style on a classic Juno 6-led riddim by Naram.

Tippa’s Down in the Ghetto lyric first came about as a freestyle delivered whilst driving Naram to LAX airport. Naram saw it fit to record a video - instagram.com/p/BemjPuHAcDg - of Tippa’s handiwork and, revisiting it months later, he decided the tune deserved to find its way to wax.

So Naram re-recorded the riddim properly with live syn drums (courtesy of the classic Roland DDR-30 unit), and Red Robin sent Tippa to work in the studio.

The result is an authentic piece of late-80s inspired rub-a-dub, that will clear the dancefloor at any Euro steppas festival but warm the heart of any true lover of hardcore digital reggae.

The fire starter from Te Mata, Red Robin Records, is proud to announce its very first full length LP – showcasing the unique Waterhouse style vocals of their dear friend Winston ‘Midnight Riders’ Powell. 

The culmination of nearly five years work (and two trips to Jamaica), Midnight Riders meets the Naram Rhythm Section celebrates the full breadth of 80s reggae culture – with ten tracks running from classic roots to hardcore rub-a-dub to obscure digital.

Surprisingly, this release also marks the debut album for the veteran Midnight Riders – who first cut his teeth in Jamaican studios such as Channel One and Blue Mountain in the early 80s.

With the benefit of wisdom, Midnight Riders recounts tales of long nights in the dancehall, love (lost and found) and the realities of life in the ghetto in both Jamaica and America.

With the rhythms all played, recorded and mixed by New Zealand’s rub-a-dub chemist Naram, this album is a compelling tribute to a classic period of reggae history and a must have for any serious collector.
