Kiss of Life

It's been 7 years since my last mix. This one is inspired by a renaissance of new friends and old ones who came back into my life after hiding out for so long from the pandemic. Love them while you have them.

Aura Red

Here's the last vinyl mix I ever recorded back in the 90's. It's fun to go back and hear some of these sounds that people are still working with today. This is my best work. I used the first three tracks from v1.0, but went a different direction with the sound. There were some challenging risks I took that paid off. Like v1.0, I know some of the track. Alpha Omega v2.0

This was my first experiment with mix software around mid-2011. There were a few tracks I wanted to me able to change and loop on the fly. I was worried that the variety of genres was too ambitious, but it worked out in the end. Staying true to one of my themes, this one is just full of styles melded together in a cohesive blend. I Mixed it more like a. vinyl set with no compression, so the levels are a little more raw. Enjoy!

Lifeline

This one was made late-2011 and hits the ground running. It keeps a driving feel throughout. It has a little bit of everything, but keeps a tight sound. I started futzing with compression and learned some of the pitfalls during the breakdowns/buildups. Took those lessons and made my later mixes stronger.

Pubcrawler

Terrace View was made late-2011 with a focus on a Deep House sound. I was more confident with my digital mixing and felt like my skill was getting closer to my former peak when I was still working exclusively with vinyl. At this point I started experimenting with soundscapes--long mixes with elements from different songs, layered over each other with the levels working in harmony so they don't drown each other out or sound forced. It got me thinking more about what my true sound was and pushed me in some new creative directions. More to come!

Terrace View

Completed late-2011, this one was more of a homework assignment to myself: pick two songs by two of my favorite artists (The Timewriter and Oliver Lieb), and build around them. The result was a nice mix of House around TT and Techno around OL. It was fun to swing between genres to connect the variety of sounds into seamless mood. I started feeling comfortable again with tweaking knobs and having fun with the levels for drops, and I was getting much better with using the compressor to my advantage for build-ups. More to come. Night Light

Like my previous mix, Night Light, this one has a lot of Techno, but with more of a warehouse and less of a disco vibe. Played with some Dark Breaks and Deep House while working toward the peak-time sound, so there's still something for everyone. Mixed in late-2012, just one year after my previous mix, Licorice Whip was inspired by a night of listening to a local Techno legend, Jon E Thin, throw down so hard that my camera shook with each beat when I recorded him--no stabilizing when the sound is that hard. There's some dissonance, but it's balanced out with enough beauty to keep from getting too creeped out.

Licorice Whip

Love Drug was made in late-2012, just after Licorice Whip, but with an emphasis on peak-time, dance-friendly Deep House. Where Licorice Whip went to the extreme with Techno, Love Drug does it with the Deep House. Compare and contrast. This one is in the top three of my mixes I play during my cardio. Love Drug

Mixed one year after Love Drug in late-2013, Kicks takes me back to my dark origins: the moodier side of New Wave; the unforgiving sound of Electronic Body Music. I wouldn't let myself record anything during that year until I connected with my roots and found a sound that felt genuine. Techno and Deep House clubs make me feel alive when there's a good DJ who makes me forget about the physical space I take up; when I can just let it go and transcend. I always felt like a guest, though. Kicks is closer to home. It brought me closer to my quintessential sound. It features Dark Breaks, Deep House, Techno, and a bunch of moods in between them.

Creepy Kicks

T | R was an exercise in spontaneity I recorded at the end of 2013. My mixes are all I listen to in my workouts, so I tend to plan them for a couple of weeks since I tend to listen to them hundreds of times and overanalyze every aspect of them. For this one, I took off the training wheels and went where the inspiration took me. By this point I was buying exclusively lossless tracks, so the sound punches a little harder. There are a couple of parts I wish sounded better, but it's the same risk when I used to play live, so I learned to forgive myself. At the time, it was also my longest mix at nearly two hours. Plenty of little nooks and moods for all tastes in this one. Have at it!

Tension | Release

Rhythms was the last mix I made in 2013, and it was battle-tested on my jogs through Balboa Park. It went through a few iterations before I landed on a fluid track sequence and a mix I was satisfied with. My previous mix, Tension | Release, was an unplanned mix, but AR was planned hard. Like T | R, all the tracks are lossless, so the sound ir chunky. It's the digital mix I'm most satisfied with, and the one I play the most. It's also close to my true sound, a Dark Disco odyssey. Stay tuned for my next passion project along these lines. I'm really excited to share it when I finish. In the mean, enjoy Arcadian Rhythms on some good headphones or a solid sound system.

Arcadian Rhythms

As the son of a professional flamenco singer, Thomas has always been surrounded by music.  Exposure to flamenco influenced him because it has a dynamic range of emotions—from the "deep singing" style of cante hondo, to the more lively alegrias.  He has also worked in the corporate, independent, and online music industry for a number of years.  At one point he was a Content Manager for the Electronic Music genre at MP3.com, where he screened over 500 songs per day.  Exposure to a wide range of music explains the range of genres in his mixes—he uses whatever carries the mood.  From listening to Umm Kulthum's "Enta Omri" in his childhood, to New Wave and  Industrial as a teen, it became difficult for him to stick to one sound. Though vinyl was his original format of choice when he started in the 90s, the use of digital mixing has helped him better form soundscapes to expand your headspace.  Let him play with your moods for a spell.
