Something a little different from me this month. I was laid out sick for a couple of weeks over Christmas and when I’m feeling fraught and low I tend to reach for things that are bleak and achingly beautiful - Pure Shores on a hangover right? I rewatched Paris, Texas and Wild At Heart, and for the first time read The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, a stunning book that made me feel like a teenager again, and a heartbreaking study in isolation. I have a real big thing for the American South and South West, a sublime and truly weird part of the world, that’s full of ghosts and heavy with history in a wholly different way to the otherworldly deep time of Britain. So I have a lot of love for road movies, there's something about the intense psychodrama of individual lives and relationships set against such a relentlessly inhospitable and unmoving landscape that ties my insides in knots. This one’s a tribute to the haunted South, a haunting that’s deeply entwined with the material life of recording technologies. Deep and lengthy drone works interplay with the disembodied voice of William Burroughs, abstracted in cut up tape, and crackly 7” rips carry echoes of long dead blues, country, and rock ’n’roll singers, the reverberations of youth from another generation, in another time.

Felicity Mangan is an Australian sound artist, composer and educator based in Berlin, Germany since 2008. Felicity plays with the timbres and biorhythmic patterns of her field recording archive to create quasi-bioacoustic music. Felicity has played in collaborative projects Native Instrument (Shelter Press, Entr’acte) presenting electro-acoustic bug beats with vocalist Stine Janvin. Felicity has released solo publications on Longform Editions titled Stereo’frog’ic, a play on the word stereophonic –  presenting a sound piece, crafted from found recordings of frogs, insects and other ‘vocal’ animals wavering about in a stereo field. More recently a tape release titled Creepy Crawly on Slovakian label Mappa Editions and  Bell Metal Reeds (One Instrument). Felicity has presented projects in many different settings from galleries, gardens, clubs, festivals and online platforms throughout Europe, including National Gallery Denmark, Technosphärenklänge CTM/HKW, Sonic Acts Academy, RIVERSSSOUNDS.org and recently sound design for 100 Climate Conversations , Powerhouse Museum, Sydney, Australia.

This month, host Gavilán Rayna Russom invites special guest Rachika Nayar. Rachika’s mix was recorded live at the Voluminous Arts office party celebrating our latest release, Marcy Angeles’ Chasing Horses. Rachika’s lush sounds introduce the mix and span its first 35 minutes. Following that Rayna shares a recent club mix recorded live from the booth at New York’s Le Bain for 4am NYC’s birthday.
Voluminous Arts is a creative support network disguised as a record label, founded by Gavilán Rayna Russom in March, 2020 to disseminate works by boundary pushing artists.
Rachika Nayar is a Brooklyn-based musician. On her debut, Our Hands Against the Dusk, Nayar used her guitar as the primary source for sound design, mutating the instrument beyond recognition through layers of digital processing. Soon after, the album’s companion EP, Fragments, on RVNG Intl’s imprint Commend, demonstrated the types of raw guitar playing that would be transfigured into those grander compositions - miniature genre sketches that touched upon everything from post-rock to Midwestern Emo. Gavilán Rayna Russom is an interdisciplinary artist based in New York City. Rayna is the founder of Voluminous Arts, a creative support network for boundary pushing artists.
