This month's transmission of Virology features Asian Dub Foundation founder and bassist Dr. Das aka Dhangsha.

Under this new moniker he makes rhythmic noise with a grounding in dub, and frequently collaborates with London's Sound-space label. 

The first hour is a mix of his own productions, followed by an interview discussing decolonisation, mentoring, political music and new music tech.

We are kick starting our mix series again!

Following a bit of a break brought about by our now regular show on Netil Radio, we are honoured and very excited to have a recording from Dhangsha, aka Dr Das of Asian Dub Foundation. We have decided to aim our mix series at more particular sounds, with less of a focus on DJs and more on exploring the sounds and influences of producers and bands. Dhangsha has put together an awesome mix, or rather a soundtrack, entitled ‘Refugee Backpacker / Dream Holiday’. HUGE thanks to Dhangsha for this bone rattling journey.

“Refugee Backpacker / Dream Holiday” is an imaginary score assembled by Dhangsha and inspired by Philip K Dick’s “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale,” made famous by the film “Total Recall” starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. The new interpretation of the story would be made from an anti-colonial perspective with a view to compelling the audience to challenge their prejudices regarding various global relations when confronted with the economic realities underpinning them.

Text from Dhangsha: "Aniruddha Das, better known as “Dr Das,” bassist and co- founder of Asian Dub Foundation has always been interested in all forms of ‘experimental’ sound. Over the last 30 years he has explored ‘noise’ within the context of ‘dub.’ With his current projects he is, to different degrees, dismantling and disintegrating the rhythmic framework to expose the beauty of noise in its own right. As such, he is attempting to demonstrate the proximity of ‘noise’ to the dance floor.

For this session, not only has he drawn upon his work with Dhangsha (Bengali for ‘destruction’) and DSPSSSSD (‘dispossessed’), but he’s presented tracks from various artists who’ve inspired him and who share some of the same sonic rationale, if not sometimes political - namely, people like Bantu, Simon Grab, Sankara Future Dub Resurgence, Hallucinator and Evicshen."

Taking a moment is an objectively good thing to do. Whether you prescribe to mindfulness, meditation, monging out or constant moving, a few breaths, a brief respite and some calm never go astray. This week Matt Ferret dons his home listening cowboy hat and takes the reigns for a slow saunter through a mixtape that is geared more towards tranquil come downs and introspection.

Over the course of the hour comfort reigns supreme on Tape 49. Swirls of ambience shift and swim into emotive neo-folk and washed out guitar esoterica, contemporary spoken word meets laid back drum programming and classic comfort songs give way to sunny and soulful jazz. The tunes hold this mix together, not the mixing - warm and fuzzy sounds that tug at your heartstrings and gently wrap you up.

Assembled for quiet nights in, lazy afternoons out or moments when the 'doof doof' gets a a bit too much, "In, Out Onward" is a sonic chill pill - pop it whenever you feel like it.
