ਗਾਇਓ ਰੀ ਮੈ ਗੁਣ ਨਿਧਿ ਮੰਗਲ ਗਾਇਓ - Ragi Avtar Singh Ji

“Bhai Sain Ditta was a ‘Hazoori Rababi’. His time for ‘Chaunki’ (music time) was from three till five in the afternoon. His co-singer was his very talented son Bhai Desa and on the tabla was Bhai Santa. I was eleven years old and had just arrived from Calcutta. I had heard that Bhai Lal and Bhai Moti were previously Hazoori Raagis. Bhai Moti had passed away and Bhai Lal was amongst the famous Raagis, which I had the privilege to listen to at ‘Durgeana Raag Darbar’ during Holi. But now he had stopped doing Kirtan.

While he was crossing the bridge, the Sangat requested Bhai Sain Ditta to perform Kirtan. Bhai Sain Ditta never used to sing any songs, which were not from Gurbani. Although being a Muslim, he was a devout follower of Sikhism. I do not remember the ‘Shabad’ nor I had the knowledge of classical music at the time, but this I saw with my own eyes. Elders say that it was Raag Malhaar which Bhai Sain Ditta rendered. It could have also been ‘Megh Malhaar’. There was not a cloud to be seen in the sky on his commencement, but slowly clouds started gathering from the side of ‘Baba Atal’. The ‘Chaunki’ was for two hours and after one and half hours it started to drizzle and at the end of ‘Chaunki’, it was raining in torrents.

When the Sangat complimented and started to thank Bhai Sain Ditta, he only said that, ‘Satguru has saved his honour’.

P.S. It was a holiday and Bhai Sain Ditta’s ‘Chaunki’ was crowded with people. I was standing behind his ‘Jatha’ when all the above took place. As the rain showers kept falling, the Sangat kept on showering Bhai Sahib with money. At that time, it was allowed to present the Raagis with money at Darbar Sahib.

ਭੂਖੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਰੋਟੀ ਵਲੋਂ ਹੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੁੱਕੀ, ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ
I am so hungry, I cannot perform devotional worship service.

ਯਹ ਮਾਲਾ ਅਪਨੀ ਲੀਜੈ ॥
ਫਿਰ ਉਹ ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿਖਾਵੇ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ । 
Here, Lord, take back Your mala.

ਹਉ ਮਾਂਗਉ ਸੰਤਨ ਰੇਨਾ ॥
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਇੱਕ ਤਾਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਰੋਟੀ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਫ਼ਿਕਰ ਕਰ, ਦੂਜੇ) ਮੈਂ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਚਰਨ-ਧੂੜ ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹਾਂ,
I beg for the dust of the feet of the Saints.

ਮੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਸੀ ਕਾ ਦੇਨਾ ॥੧॥
ਤਾਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਮੁਥਾਜ ਨਾਹ ਹੋਵਾਂ ।੧
I do not owe anyone anything. ||1||

ਮਾਧੋ ਕੈਸੀ ਬਨੈ ਤੁਮ ਸੰਗੇ ॥
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੈਥੋਂ ਸ਼ਰਮ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਨਿਭ ਸਕਣੀ
O Lord, how can I be with You?

ਆਪਿ ਨ ਦੇਹੁ ਤ ਲੇਵਉ ਮੰਗੇ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸੋ, ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਨਾਹ ਦੇਵੇਂਗਾ, ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਹੀ ਮੰਗ ਕੇ ਲੈ ਲਵਾਂਗਾ ।ਰਹਾਉ
If You do not give me Yourself, then I shall beg until I get You. ||Pause||

ਦੁਇ ਸੇਰ ਮਾਂਗਉ ਚੂਨਾ ॥
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਦੋ ਸੇਰ ਆਟੇ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਹੈ, 
I ask for two kilos of flour,

ਪਾਉ ਘੀਉ ਸੰਗਿ ਲੂਨਾ ॥
ਇਕ ਪਾਉ ਘਿਉ ਤੇ ਕੁਝ ਲੂਣ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ, 
and half a pound of ghee, and salt.

ਅਧ ਸੇਰੁ ਮਾਂਗਉ ਦਾਲੇ ॥
ਮੈਂ ਤੈਥੋਂ ਅੱਧ ਸੇਰ ਦਾਲ ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹਾਂ
I ask for a pound of beans,

ਮੋ ਕਉ ਦੋਨਉ ਵਖਤ ਜਿਵਾਲੇ ॥੨॥
ਇਹ ਚੀਜ਼ਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਦੋਹਾਂ ਵੇਲਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਗੁਜ਼ਰਾਨ ਲਈ ਕਾਫ਼ੀ ਹਨ ।੨।
which I shall eat twice a day. ||2||

ਖਾਟ ਮਾਂਗਉ ਚਉਪਾਈ ॥
ਸਾਬਤ ਮੰਜੀ ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹਾਂ
I ask for a cot, with four legs,

ਸਿਰਹਾਨਾ ਅਵਰ ਤੁਲਾਈ ॥
ਸਿਰਾਣਾ ਤੇ ਤੁਲਾਈ ਭੀ 
and a pillow and mattress.

ਊਪਰ ਕਉ ਮਾਂਗਉ ਖੀਂਧਾ ॥
ਉਪਰ ਲੈਣ ਲਈ ਰਜ਼ਾਈ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਹੈ—ਬੱਸ!
I ask for a quilt to cover myself.

ਤੇਰੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰੈ ਜਨੁ ਥਂੀਧਾ ॥੩॥
ਫਿਰ ਤੇਰਾ ਭਗਤ (ਸਰੀਰਕ ਲੋੜਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਫ਼ਿਕਰ ਹੋ ਕੇ) ਤੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਚ ਭਿੱਜ ਕੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰੇਗਾ ।੩।
Your humble servant shall perform Your devotional worship service with love. ||3||

ਮੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੀਤਾ ਲਬੋ ॥
ਕਬੀਰ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ—ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ (ਮੰਗਣ ਵਿਚ) ਕੋਈ ਲਾਲਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ, 
I have no greed;

ਇਕੁ ਨਾਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਮੈ ਫਬੋ ॥
ਕਉਂਕਿ (ਉਹ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਤਾਂ ਸਰੀਰਕ ਨਿਰਬਾਹ-ਮਾਤ੍ਰ ਹਨ) ਅਸਲ ਵਿਚ ਤਾਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਹੈ 
Your Name is the only ornament I wish for.

ਕਹਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥
ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ (ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ) ਪਰਚਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ
Says Kabeer, my mind is pleased and appeased;

ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਤਉ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥੪॥੧੧॥
ਤੇ ਜਦੋਂ ਦਾ ਪਰਚਿਆ ਹੈ ਤਦੋਂ ਤੋਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਮੇਰੀ (ਡੂੰਘੀ) ਜਾਣ-ਪਛਾਣ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹੈ ।੪।੧੧।
now that my mind is pleased and appeased, I have come to know the Lord. ||4||11||
