NASA's InSight lander, which touched down on Mars on Nov. 26, 2018, has provided the first ever "sounds" of Martian winds on the Red Planet. InSight sensors captured a haunting low rumble caused by vibrations from the wind, estimated to be blowing between 10 to 15 mph (5 to 7 meters a second) on Dec. 1, 2018, from northwest to southeast. Two very sensitive sensors on the spacecraft detected these wind vibrations: an air pressure sensor inside the lander and a seismometer sitting on the lander's deck, awaiting deployment by InSight’s robotic arm. The two instruments recorded the wind noise in different ways. The air pressure sensor, part of the Auxiliary Payload Sensor Subsystem (APSS), which will collect meteorological data, recorded these air vibrations directly. The seismometer recorded lander vibrations caused by the wind moving over the spacecraft's solar panels, which are each 7 feet (2.2 meters) in diameter and stick out from the sides of the lander like a giant pair of ears.

This sonification is of the signals recorded by NASA’s InSight Mars lander, which detected a giant meteoroid strike on Dec. 24, 2021, the 1,094th Martian day, or sol, of the mission. InSight’s seismometer records seismic signals that are not in the range of human hearing. In order to make the signals audible, the data was sped up 100 times.

Positive or negative, only time would tell. Life and death depended on the outcome but at present he remained calm, cool and collected. He had little choice. That plus or minus would determine the very course of his future, his existence, his soul. The hour would come, and soon he would know all. However, for now, he was happy to sit and wait, watching the wall, before an outcome was revealed. 
Flau is a record label of which you might be unfamiliar with. Based in Tokyo, Japan they have been operating since 2006 and have remained low key and under the radar of many. Mid June saw the release of 'Open Close Open' : a four track EP from Robert Lippok. And whilst we aren't in the habit of premiering music which is already out in the open, this seemed like a perfect opportunity to showcase something from the unknown.

Listen to data from the seismometer on NASA's InSight spacecraft of vibrations caused by Martian wind moving over the lander's solar panels. In this version, the data have been processed to raise the frequencies by two octaves to make them more audible.

France’s national space agency, Centre National d’Études Spatiales (CNES), leads the consortium that provided SEIS. The principal investigator for SEIS is Philippe Lognonné of the Institute of Earth Physics of Paris (Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris, or IPGP). Imperial College, London, and Oxford University made the short-period sensors.

More Audible Sounds from InSight's Seismometer on Mars

A recording of sounds created by InSight's robotic arm as its camera scanned the surface of Mars on March 6, 2019, the 98 th Martian day, or sol, of the mission. Also captured are wind gusts and "dinks" produced by friction inside of InSight's seismometer, called SEIS.

A recording of a magnitude 3.7 marsquake from InSight's seismometer, called SEIS. This quake was recorded on May 22, 2019 (the 173rd Martian day, or sol, of the mission). Far below the human range of hearing, this sonification from SEIS had to be sped up and slightly processed to be audible through headphones.

A recording of "dinks and donks," strange sounds created by friction inside of InSight's seismometer, called SEIS. Scientists aren't entirely sure what causes each of these sounds, by they are created by parts inside the seismometer contracting as they cool down, especially during sunset. These were recorded on just after sundown on July 16, 2019 (Sol 226).

Music for Baths Vol. I is the debut album from former Georgia resident Early Fern, and the inaugural release from new Métron Records project/sub-label small méasures - which aims to donate funds to organisations and causes of the artists choosing.

Having recently quit their full time job and begun seasonal work on organic farms, Early Fern began a process of reconnection in their own life. Taking the plunge to move away from the stresses of 9 to 5, along with the depression and anxiety engendered by participation in that lifestyle, they began to find a new grounding in remote farm-stays in Florida, Texas, and New Mexico. It was during this process that Early began recording music that mirrors their attempts to become more calm, more present, and more connected to their natural surroundings. It was in these sessions that Music for Baths was recorded.

Baths are a place where people have historically visited to find restoration, both mentally and physically, whilst soaking in the tranquility of water. It thus seemed appropriate that this record be an homage to those moments of calm, and to the process of healing. Indeed we can confirm that these tracks are a fantastic accompaniment to a soothing bath.

Early wanted to use the profits from this release to support an organisation close to their heart. Seeding Sovereignty is an indigenous womxn led collective which seeks to dismantle colonial structures and policies in politics, agriculture, and justice. These songs were recorded on colonised land, and by donating to them Early seeks to undo some of the harm of colonial structures and, in a small way, offset some of the privilege from which they benefit in a colonised nation.

Rutger Zuydervelt, a.k.a. Machinefabriek , needs no presentation to the ambient and drone audiences. (Hyper)active since the early 2000s, he epitomizes a minimalistic, electro-acoustic approach to these genres bringing together real world and synthetic oscillations. Berlinde Deman is a tuba player, and amongst many other projects member of the unconventional jazz big band Flat Earth Society.

In Luchtwezen, the two are brought together by a common veneration of the physical experience of the creation of sound. Both musicians each exploit on this record an unusual instrument: Rutger plays the Hess church organ of Oude Kerk Charlois, in south Rotterdam (together with some electronics); Berlinde sings, and plays the serpent, an ancient wind instrument, made out of wood and shaped like a snake. The meeting of the two should have taken place, as a matter of fact, in the Oude Kerk Charlois itself, during a live concert organized by Koffie & Ambacht. However, the quick rise to power of Covid-19 forced the duo to turn this get-together (as all musical get togethers during our quarantines) into a virtual one: a studio recording, that you can hear as Luchtwezen .

And yet, by just listening to the record, you may be fooled into thinking that this was a live recording - as we have all thought, because of their intensity, that some quarantine Zoom calls were not happening over a screen, but rather out there, in the real world. The flow is natural, the sound space unitary. The clicks of the organ keys are just right there in front of us. After the first brooding half, we all feel the mysterious, oriental breath flowing from the serpent in the spaces between us. And then, a simple melody sang by the organ reminds us of the feeling of excitement of going to a live concert - where you know that a serpent will dance to the sound of the organ's pipes.
