NASA's InSight lander, which touched down on Mars on Nov. 26, 2018, has provided the first ever "sounds" of Martian winds on the Red Planet. InSight sensors captured a haunting low rumble caused by vibrations from the wind, estimated to be blowing between 10 to 15 mph (5 to 7 meters a second) on Dec. 1, 2018, from northwest to southeast. Two very sensitive sensors on the spacecraft detected these wind vibrations: an air pressure sensor inside the lander and a seismometer sitting on the lander's deck, awaiting deployment by InSight’s robotic arm. The two instruments recorded the wind noise in different ways. The air pressure sensor, part of the Auxiliary Payload Sensor Subsystem (APSS), which will collect meteorological data, recorded these air vibrations directly. The seismometer recorded lander vibrations caused by the wind moving over the spacecraft's solar panels, which are each 7 feet (2.2 meters) in diameter and stick out from the sides of the lander like a giant pair of ears.

InSight Lander Sounds of Mars

A sonification of data recorded by the Italian Spring Accelerometer (ISA) aboard the BepiColombo Mercury Planetary Orbiter spacecraft during the flyby of Venus on 10 August 2021. The accelerometer data was converted to frequency to be made audible to the human ear. The audio clip represents a period of two hours, one hour either side of the close approach to Venus, which took place at 13:51:54 UTC at a distance of 552 km from the planet’s surface. The sounds reflect the rapid change in reaction wheel velocity as the spacecraft felt the gravity of the planet, and the huge changes in temperature in the spacecraft structure.

Sound of a close Venus flyby

A simple sonification of the variability of the total magnetic field during BepiColombo’s second Venus flyby as measured by the Mercury Planetary Orbiter’s Magnetometer (OB sensor). 

The audio spans the same time range 12:00 to 14:30 UTC on 10 August 2021, including the closest approach at 13:51 UTC. 

Almost all high frequency noises are due to spacecraft activity. The low frequency, wind-like noises are caused by the solar wind and its interaction with Venus. The sudden bow shock crossing towards the end can be heard clearly. The data is not yet cleaned from high pitch spacecraft disturbances, but the wind-like sounds allow a rare glimpse into the solar wind interaction with a planetary atmosphere.

What is heard is the 128 Hz measurement of the high-pass filtered (0.01 Hz) total magnetic field, mapped to audio with 44.1 kHz sampling frequency. For better audibility some compression, limiting and increase in gain is applied to the signal.

This sonification is of the signals recorded by NASA’s InSight Mars lander, which detected a giant meteoroid strike on Dec. 24, 2021, the 1,094th Martian day, or sol, of the mission. InSight’s seismometer records seismic signals that are not in the range of human hearing. In order to make the signals audible, the data was sped up 100 times.

A recording recently rediscovered in the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory audio archives comes from Project Relay, an early satellite communications project. Relay, managed by NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, involved an “active” satellite that received and retransmitted signals on a different frequency. In this audio file from Jan. 29, 1963, Jack James, manager of the Mariner program exploring the inner solar system at JPL, speaks with John Glenn, who was then providing astronaut input into the new Apollo program.

Scientists aren't entirely sure what causes each of these sounds, by they are created by parts inside the seismometer contracting as they cool down, especially during sunset. These were recorded on just after sundown on July 16, 2019 (Sol 226).
