Convolvers For Birds

I recorded these humpback whales with the group Ecosono, on a scientific boat. Baleins Spectrales is a soundscape taken in the north Pacific Ocean of Alaska. It depicts the whale singing and bubble nest feeding of fish, that I translated inside a deep electroacoustic mass, aimed with a granular, extended and delta movement of frequencies along the whole spectrum of sound. The piece I composed later for a musical commission from the CalState Fullerton School of Music is a conglomeration of high and low frequencies moving like the seas, combining whale singing as a melody line, swimming with on the GRM Tools designed by the IRCAM in Paris. We can hear how these amazing creatures tell us their pod secret voices. My composition was presented for the first time at the World Listening Electroacustic Room Forum at the California State University, on March 1st 2014 in the Ocean Biome Concert. It was comissioned after, for the first Ecoacoustic Festival in 2017, during the RuSh Hour concert at the International Gallery of Art at the Anchorage Museum, where composers presented music made from Alaskan whales, oceans, birds and glaciers.  

Spectral Baleins was composed in the studio at the national conservatory of Nice, France, using sounds of humpback whales singing recorded with the EcoSono Institute of Alaska in 2012, Gulf of Alaska. A spectral wash of sound submerges the voices of these great marine mammals inside a deep electro-acoustic mass, resembling their beautiful but endangered status of their ocean.

It starts with the voice of a human heard by an insect, after we can hear an entire colony. Next part is a recording of the stepping of hundreds of cricket legs and callings made near the microphone.

La Planète Desert, est une composition nourrit de la génération du son électrique des synthétisateurs analogiques RSF Kobol, un AKS EMS et un Korg MS20: une trame sonore rythmique constitué des événements qui viennent nous attraper dans une masse de fréquences analogiques contrôles par filtres variables dans le temps. Une histoire de synthèse qui rappelle le desert par le bruit et sa variation, et qui évoque une vent violent ainsi que des voix electroniques flottants et éphémères. L’inspiration de cette pièce est venue par la crise climatique, qui fait accroître un desert dans plusieurs zones en danger de notre planète. 

Composed playing a RSF Kobol synthesizer, an analogic AKS EMS synth and the Korg MS20 synth the piece reflects the ecological crisis we live. The title evoques the science fiction saga, Dune of Frank Herbert.
