The devil by my side
Despite how hard I’ve tried

To rid you, ban you, make you leave

The way you pull
The way you pry
Heart palpitates,
Glands salivate.

Fear is a presence.

Tell me what I can’t do
Warn me of what might be if I- 
Do this.
Say that
Wrong.

Once Misunderstood.
Maligned in my mind. 
I now accept you.
Dark shadowy cloud.
Fear is my friend.

You offer no comfort or consolation.
With all the things you say

The world behind you is hidden from view
And yet you lead the way.

You offer your hand, as if for a dance

Questions and Answers

He who loves the Answers
but despises the Questions

Will spend his days in agonizing anxiety
Unable to let them come and go
rather than worrying that they do.

He who requires an answer
Before the question has been fully formed

Will receive an answer 
Raw and sour as a bright red blackberry

To desire a day
when all Questions have Answers
is to desire the end of life itself.

At the end of my life
I can hoard my answers
but what then will I become 
but a bag of bones?

Better to revel now
In the uncertainty of it all
than to wait for that fabled day

where all has been done 
and nothing’s left unspoken.

Questions are life
Answers mark its end.

So why praise one 
And fear the other?

Reconnecting To Joy

The Reckoning:

Power comes from two places: Action, or Acceptance.
In our culture, we are very familiar with the action oriented method of wielding power. But life has a way offering obstacles that we don’t have any power to change or control. In these instances, acceptance is the most powerful action we can take.
What does it mean to reckon with something? There are many definitions but I want to offer a specific interpretation.
To reckon with something is to accept a truth we do not want to hear. To reckon with fate is to take reality into account and allow a truth to just be. To fight against a reality greater than ourselves is to brandish a sword at the sky – to pin a wave to the shore. Submission to the will of fate grants us freedom from our own mind. Acceptance of what is brings a bittersweet peace that sounds like Hallelujah.
Tonight I invite you to live in the duality of the power of letting go. I invite you to take pleasure in the aliveness of pain. Know that there is beauty in suffering. Find the peace and the power in the complexity of what life has to offer us.
