Program Note:
"A brooding duet for the self, 'Cimmerian Isolation' finds meaning in the interplay between the sound of the flute and the performer's own primal uttering. These two often separate entities interact with and are greatly accentuated by the live electronics. 'Cimmerian' in this case references it's definition as an adjective meaning 'very dark or gloomy' and attempts to elicit imagery of a wealthy recluse who lived in cimmerian isolation in a decaying Victorian mansion,  left only to themselves and descending into eventual madness."

Program Note:
"High Flyer has passages where the player is asked to shape his mouth and vocal cavities to various vowels and consonants. The "text" of these passages is mostly nonsensical - it functions as a very precise notation of the composed timbre of the music. The words are, therefore, not meant to be projected distinctly. There are, nevertheless, moments when a word or a phrase (albeit distorted) will filter through the texture of the music. Air sounds, multiphonics, humming while playing, and other extensions of traditional flute technique are used freely, as are both finger and lip glissandi."

Program Note:
"While writing this piece a friend of mine was working on a painting of a girl. This painting was initially done in a very dark black ink that was then covered in a warm orange paint. The effect was the image of the girl showing clearly through the paint in some places, while being pushed back and more subdued in others. I was taken with the idea that a subject can be forced to the bottom layer of a fine field of color and considered its implications sonically. The idea was to create a piece that maintains a warm (or perhaps dark) field of sonic color, with similar 'images' of the same 'subject' slowly coming to the foreground. Still, it was always my goal to create a piece where these two ideas are always congruent with each other, while still countering and shifting the focus and subject matter in a homogenous way."

this work was the first piece i wrote after i partially recovered from a fairly awful case of writers stoppage. this difficulty in writing was less driven by a lack of inspiration but more a difficulty in the actual process due to anxiety and ocd(obsessive compuslive disorder). an anxiety of influence compounded by a need to repeat actions during the process made composing laborious in all the wrong ways. for this musical work I took the digital footprint of my compulsive actions (ie. repetitive 'saving', generative naming) and turned it into rhythmic patterns performed by the flute. these rhythms form the anchor from which the piece spins into chaos only to be saved by the "chords" in the work. this moment of clarity is just that, a therapeutic awaking. this is the first time i have repurposed digital artifacts from my illness. it was liberating.

An advocate for new and experimental music, Natalie Magaña actively commissions new solo and chamber works for flute and is an active member in a number of chamber ensembles dedicated to contemporary music. She is currently pursuing her Master of Music at Bowling Green State University, holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Texas at San Antonio and her teachers include Conor Nelson, Rita Linard, Martha Long, Jean Robinson, and Rebecca Murphy.
