Derrière une illustration originale de Michel Gondry, une odyssée sonore qui crée un mélange aux nombreuses ambiances : clin d’oeil aux BO de films, au minimalisme de la cold wave, au groove acoustique, et la voix emblématique d’une chanteuse new-yorkaise…

Il faut prendre le nouvel album de Simili Skaï comme une épopée. Moderne et générationnelle. Elle court sur presque deux décennies. Simili Skaï existe depuis 1994.
L'histoire du groupe ressemble à des histoires comme il en existe tant dans le rock. Mais l'on sait bien que les passions de jeunesse ne meurent jamais.
Quelques années plus tard, Simili Skaï se retrouve. Plus mûr, plus aguerri. Le quintet est désormais emmené par Nathalie Frederic, belle et longue liane new-yorkaise d'origine Haïtienne. Une rencontre salutaire pour Simili Skai qui peut enfin mettre en pratique toutes ses influences.
Sur The French Ride, le nouvel album de Simili Skai, il y a donc des clins d'oeil aux BO de films, au minimalisme de la cold wave, à la pop anglaise, à la soul «old school».
Ce n'est pas un voyage sur un long fleuve tranquille. Un riff de guitare démarre quand un arpège d'accordéon calme le jeu quelques instants plus tard. On passe d'un titre ska cajun électrifié (« Divorce Court »), à une ballade acoustique aux accents mélancoliques (« Salt and Vinegar »), pour repartir ensuite vers un « Tinder Box » décomplexé, référence toute crachée à un des albums mythique de Siouxie and the Banshees.
A noter enfin que c'est le réalisateur et grand passionné de rock Michel Gondry himself qui a réalisé la pochette de l'album. Simili Skaï nous est tombé sur la tête.
Et nous file une sacré claque.
