'Flammepunkt' was a multi-media outdoor performance that took place on the 14th September 2014, Eidsvoll, Norway. 'Flammepunkt' was created to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Norwegian Constitution.

The music for 'Flammepunkt' consists of 22 miniature compositions (in stereo) and a multi-channel composition. The track you're listening to is a stereo mix of the latter.

The work were inspired by observing how people and governments interact in situations of disagreement: what happens when a large proportion of the population support a protest against their government, what happens when the general public feel they have no voice in their own country, what happened during the political revolutions and democratic fights in Europe and the Middle East.

My own markers on the track show a rough translation of Norwegian texts.

Stereo mixes of some of the 'waves' of sound that wash through the We Are Not Alone  installation space. It's tricky to make a representative mix down of ambisonics, wave field synthesis and ultrasonic sound beam into a normal stereo track. These sounds serve just as a simple illustration of the basic materials.

A collector's chest holds many small compartments within which are organised all kinds of treasures: from a child's stones, shells, dead insects, leaves or trinkets, to priceless type-specimens or collections from world voyages. In this composition, treasures are collected from recordings of the Norwegian ensemble POING-FEED's interpretation of composed musical ideas. These are then transformed and organised as 'type specimens' in a collector's chest of sounds. The music assembles in performance: improvisation meets notation and acousmatic sound, and a multitude of compartments are opened to let sound escape into the air.

A Collector's Chest was commissioned by POING-FEED with support from the Norwegian Cultural Council.

Extract from Topology Chamber 2 (5th order 3D ambisonics).

'Topology Chamber 2' is an acousmatic composition in high-order ambisonics (5th order 3D) created from the sonification of spatial performance and instrument motion. Data describing 3-D motion is captured from the recordings of a balloon and a cymbal being explored for their sounding characters. The motion data and sound recordings are analysed and segmented into micro- and meso-scale 'chunks' characterised by gestural qualities, and the chunks are in turn 'rearranged' into larger datasets by way of coarticulation and concatenation. These new datasets, idiomatic of the original gestural performance qualities are sonified using a custom made application where you can explore the spatial gestural image from it's 'inside', while maintaining realistic parallax and parameter scaling. The sonifications are then used as the building blocks for a composition exploring 'tangible' acousmatic sound, placing the listener alongside an invisible body-centred spatial expression where tensions emerge from the pull between known gestural archetypes and musical abstractions.

Extract from 'Urban Melt in Park Palais Meran' (4'55-8'48). In binaural for headphone listening.

All source materials for this piece are from a single recording made in a public park in Graz. The recording was made with an EigenMike. I then decomposed the spatial soundfield to be able to extract individual sound sources and track their positions in space. This material then fed back into the composition.

This is the binaural (headphones) version of 'Optical Tubes'. 'Optical Tubes' is movement 2 from the work 'Hidden Values', composed originally in 7th order 3D higher order ambisonics for the Espace de Projection, IRCAM, France.
