Soapbox Sonata for solo flute, Op. 13

This duo for two trios (violin and 2 violas; soprano and 2 altos) is lovingly dedicated to my partner, Christina Kelly. This was performed by AnnMarie Pinard on violin, myself and Mary Barba on viola, soprano Courtney Magoon, and altos Kelli Minelli and Katrina Walczyk.

“Daphne Comes Out as Asexual” is the result of a multi-disciplinary collaboration between myself and my sculptor friend of mine. The music was written to accompany a sculpture of theirs of the same name. The sculpture itself is a reinterpretation of Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s sculpture Apollo and Daphne (1622–25), which depicts Daphne’s transformation into a tree to escape the unsolicited advances of Apollo. In the sculpture and my piece, the threatening presence of Apollo is noticeably absent—rendering the transformation not reactive and defensive, but actively ecstatic and joyous. The artist further connects their interpretation of this transformation to coming out as asexual (or, not feeling sexual attraction), an identity that is too frequently—and unfairly—characterized as a “lack of” or “absence of” something. As the sculpture and my accompanying piece express, asexuality is substantially more than negative space.

"Daphne Comes Out as Asexual" is scored for baritone voice and five violas, all performed, recorded, and mixed by me. The sculptor and I would like to thank all those who assisted with the creation of the sculpture in any way. All sculpture models are asexual.

Okay so I couldn't not do my own arrangement of this after hearing it in Super Smash Bros Brawl. This was not composed by me for the record, I just arranged the melody. All credit for composition here goes to Michiko Naruke.

I arranged it for string quartet with a couple other acoustic instruments including drums at a swing tempo! Hope you like it! :)
