re·cast was written around one main idea; the evolution and development of two common musical effects. One of these is the tremolo, which is used to explore different textures on the horizontal plane of time. The other effect is the slide or glissando, which is used to explore the vertical plane of pitch, often influencing and connecting to the piece’s pitch construction and harmonic movement. Both of these effects are utilized together to develop the music in a third dimension - timbre. Where the development of the tremolos and slides are used to generate material within each individual section, the timbral combinations are used to guide the overall form and pacing of the piece. 

   Featuring major portions of aleatory (chance/improvisation), the piece's main idea relies on the individual player’s performance of their own line, as well as their adaptation and reaction to what sounds are happening in other areas of the ensemble.

The idea of the piece formed after observing a collection of art from the Deviantart collective. One of the works listed was Natasha Levandoski's 'Trust Me' which triggered the concept of the work. The piece reflects on some of the artists that I have encountered over the last few years. The primary focus of the work is the exploration of artistic style and detail through rhythmic and harmonic densities. Each miniature selects specific aspects of each piece of art and explores it musically.

Recently, 'Art Miniatures' won the Hatz Award in the recent NFMC Composition Competition (2019). In 2018, 'Art Miniatures' was awarded a prize in the Ohio Federation of Music Clubs Collegiate Composition Contest (OFMC). The piece has been performed extensively by Laura Silva, namely at the West Fork New Music Festival, SCI Region V Conference, the OFMC Music Conference, sOUndings, and both mine and Laura's Master's recitals.

Art Miniatures

"Each year, approximately five-hundred billion plastic cups are used, of which roughly six billion cups end up in landfills every year. "...grind..." is an 8.1 channel fixed media piece in which a one-second sound file, of a plastic Keurig coffee pod hitting the floor, morphs into more destructive sound forces, symbolic of the faulty business and political ideologies that ultimately contribute to a lack of environmental sustainability. The vast majority of this work was created with Richard Garrett's "Audio Spray Gun."
