this 142 bpm track started out as an experiment with a yamaha rx5 i have recently acquired, you can really change the sounds quite a bit with it, taking a cowbell into a noise pad type of territory for instance, i started grooving out and had to bust a little jam with the elektron analog 4 since i wound up with some patches i made that just worked perfectly with the strange rx5 sounds, the rx5 was a $95 craigslist special, gotta' love cheap old but quite capable gear like this, peace and love and i hope you enjoy the track!

there was a time in the long long time ago, where i had to make an emergency trip out to las vegas for my computer related work, i was able to diagnose the issue and get my part of the job done quickly so was ready to set off early the next day (i am not a fan of las vegas, best to get out quickly!) i was driving west on the 15 not too far on the california side when i saw a sign on the side of the road "tune into am 610? or something, for information", i promptly tuned in, my ears were then listening to info about the surrounding area, volcanic flow remnants, gigantic sand dunes, and all sorts of fun stuff! i decided to make a detour, i am not sure which road i drove down but i think it was just past baker. i remember driving and seeing these banks of dark rock, like an ocean swell that was at its peak and then petrified for the rest of its existence, it was lava flow that had come up eons ago, just beautiful and perfect to trip on and set the mood for the next. after crossing a railroad and driving a bit more, the next was up. i was at the base of the kelso dunes, apparently the largest dunes in california, it was 102 degrees out but that wasn't much of a deterrent i thought. for some reason when it hits like 98 degrees and up, i start feeling crazy and that i just have to go out in the heat and do some strenuous activity, riding bikes up hills, doing a bunch of yard work, or in this case climbing some very tall sand dunes. it was a slow affair, trudging through the sand, sidestepping bits of vegetation that let me know that life can happen in the most hostile places, it was 102 out at this time, i had plenty of water and was on my way up and up the dunes. when i was about halfway up, climbing along the crest of some of the medium sized dunes towards the tallest of them, things started getting really trippy, i'm talking about it is way too hot out wtf are you doing type of trippy, a bit of light headedness and dizziness always accompanies this feeling. i looked down the opposite side i had climbed up, and it looked like i was at least a couple hundred feet up, atop this giant dune; i imagined myself passing out as if into a dream, slowly falling and tumbling down the side, would i be able to even get up or would i just end up laying there and that's it for me on this amazing blue ball floating in our tiny solar system? i prayed again, "lord let me come back to my girl at home, my love, and let me see kids and grandkids, if it would be your will..." everything was getting more and more surreal so i meditated and i kept talking to god and walking onwards, breathing deeply and slowly walking in step, i needed to get to the top and i had come so far already. automatic pilot came on and i kept on keeping on up the crest of the taller dunes, onwards and forward to the tallest of them all, i was singing/humming some of the music that almost always runs through my mind and just going forward and onward, i had a feeling of well being and i knew internally that my fate was not at the bottom of the dunes, at least not today! i kept climbing through the sand and up and up and eventually, i was at the top, i could see almost as far as an eagle up there, i was on top of the tallest dunes in california and it was 102 out, just amazing and in awe of everything around me as i gazed off far into the distances. i said a prayer and was grateful, to be alive, for all of my family and friends and those that love, for being able to come so far, in life and in love, and most of all just for being alive. it was a gorgeous journey for me up the kelso dunes, i came away reset and fulfilled, grateful and full of happiness, sometimes going to an extreme can bring it out and is exactly the medicine that we need.

this is a 142bpm test with the korg volca fm, the melody that comes in is an fm sound that i programmed into the new little korg fm synthesizer, this track is basically a test recording to share the sound with some friends in the context of a song, i may or may not take the pieces and rearrange them to a full song at another date in time, either way i will be bringing this fantastic little synth box out to the desert with me for a live pa performance with the firetribe crew out of southern california in mid april ;)
