there was a moment early on in covid, driving for hours on a highway, eyes burning from anxiety, and reading surreal messages stitched into road signs about the rising death toll. later i heard the sound of helicopters outside my building as police tried to desperately enforce a curfew, in order to stop people from protesting murders and systemic injustice/racism. my friends and i walked across the bridge as the buzz of being around thousands while previously being isolated started vibrated within our bodies, something like electricity which you could feel bouncing back and forth. the sun set over a clear horizon, chants in the background, anticipation of the upcoming violence, and the lines turned pink, and my friend turned to me and asked if i could text her the photo i just took. she wanted to send it to her mom.

Random Rules (Silver Jews Cover)

I'm sure everyone's sick of hearing this kind of story ; but this track was written & recorded during the first month of the Covid-19 outbreak, in direct response to it, while sheltering in place.

It captures my initial impressions of the outbreak, which also included dating someone long distance (naturally disintegrated), and finding escape in The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, a book I had never read and assumed was for children, but which is beloved by the original surrealists.
