Note de programme : 
Même si la plénitude et l’envie peuvent bien sembler contradictoires, mon expérience personnelle m’a plutôt démontré qu’ils sont plutôt très près l’un de l’autre. En effet, la plénitude, le calme de l’esprit, le sentiment de se sentir ancré·e dans le moment présent sont souvent atteints après beaucoup d’efforts et de travail sur soi. L’envie de faire quelque chose d’autre, d’être ailleurs où d’être différent n’est jamais bien loin. Cette oeuvre est inspirée par cette opposition et balance entre les deux états. 
La musique, au début tumultueuse, devient graduellement limpide puis éthérée. La répétition, toujours enrichie de délicates variations, plonge les interprètes et l’auditeur dans un état second qui invite à l’introspection. La douceur du son, la clarté des timbres et la durée de près d’une demi-heure engendrent une expérience d’écoute semblable à la méditation où l’attention est parfois intensément concentrée sur la musique, parfois à la dérive des pensées. 
Cette oeuvre est dédiée à Mark McGregor, qui, en plus d’être un musicien hors pair, est un ami et allié précieux à qui je dois beaucoup.

Program note : 
Even if mindfulness and longing can seem like two contradictory states, my personal experience taught me that one is never far from the other. Mindfullness, a calm state of mind, the feeling of being anchored in the here and now, is generally attained after much efforts. Longing, the desire to be somewhere else, to do something else, to be somebody else, is always lurking. This opposition shaped this work that balances between these two states. 
The music, at the beginning tumultuous, becomes gradually transparent and the ethereal. The repetition, constantly enriched by delicate variations, ask for introspection from the performers and the listeners. The softness of the sounds, the fragility of the timbres, and the long duration creates a listening experience akin to meditation, where one’s attention is sometimes intensely focused on the music, and sometimes drifting in a stream of thoughts. 

This work is dedicated to Mark McGregor, who, in addition to being a wonderful musician, is a close friend and a precious ally to whom I owe so much.

Chikako Morishita - Etude

Nathan Friedman is a clarinetist and composer currently based in Victoria, BC. He completed his MA in Composition/Experimental Music at Wesleyan University in 2014, studying with Anthony Braxton, Paula Matthusen, Ronald Kuivila and Neely Bruce.  He finished a Bachelor of Music in composition at the University of Victoria in April 2011 after studying composition with John Celona, Wolf Edwards, Dániel Péter Biró and Christopher Butterfield and clarinet with Patricia Kostek and Ed Nishimura. He has also had private lessons and workshops with Michael Finnissy, Chaya Czernowin and Judith Shatin. His compositions have been performed by The Vancouver Clarinet Trio, loadbang, Michael Robert-Broder & Corey Hamm, and others, and read by Ensemble Contemporain de Montréal+, the JACK Quartet and Quasar Quatuor de Saxophones.
