An interview with Sherry Lewis, Managing Director of Brantford Native Housing. The Interview goes over issues of Native rights and relations in Brantford and the Brant area. 

Brantford Native Housing has been helping out the Brantford-Native homeless community since  2006. They now house over 18 families in their community boarding houses.

Sally Simpson is a 48 year-old student at Wilfred Laurier University in Brantford, Ontario. On the outside, Simpson seems like just an average student, but what most people do not know is that she is making a list. That may not sound like a big deal, but to her; it has occupied her life for over a year now.

In 2012, Simpson decided to start work on a project that would list Female-Native accomplishments as part of one of her courses. “We had to make some creative expression to honour Indigenous Women… by the time the first class was over; I had decided that I was going to make a collage.”

Simpson was raised in New Castle and lived in Toronto for 22 years prior to moving to Brantford. Simpson, now a 3rd year Organizational Leadership and Contemporary Studies double major, explained. “Last year in my Indigenous Women’s class with Dr. Carole Leclair,” said Simpson. “We were going through the syllabus, she gets to the project part and I’m like, ‘Oh my God! I don’t know how to do anything! I can’t sew. And I’m the least crafty person I know.’”
Simpson assumed that it would be an easy task – researching a few names, collecting a few relevant pictures and her piece would be complete. But, what started as a class assignment took on quite a new aspect once Simpson did a bit of research. 

Simpson began her research by looking for all lists that talk about Female – Native accomplishments. “I go to look for it – doesn’t exist!” 

This list is one which many, including Simpson, just assumed existed - but it didn't. Before giving up on her class assignment entirely, Simpson decided to try calling the Native Women’s Association of Canada – According to Simpson, they told her outright that the list she was searching for really does not exist at all. 

It was then that Simpson decided to take it upon herself to help recognize the great Native Women of Canada and their contributions to their communities and Canada, as a country. 
“Trailblazing Native Women deserve to be documented. I find it interesting and shameful that we didn’t have one yet,” said Simpson. “Me being me, I thought surely I could find a list of 10 women. So that’s how the list got started.”

To date, Simpson has recorded over 64 Female-Native accomplishments and is researching more.

Jason Bowman, a representative to Bill Squire and the Mohawk Workers group, along with several other residents of Six Nations, gathered outside Brantford City Hall hoping to stage a round dance outside Mayor Chris Friel's office. When they got to City Hall, they were locked out. Upset by this, the protesters shook the doors and asked the security guards why they were not allowed in.

The reason was a 'credible' threat which Chris Friel's office workers had come across on twitter earlier in the day - a threat strong enough to worry the mayor quite a bit.
