For our 34th release on Area Remote were happy to welcome our Canadian friends The Junkies and Nathan Barato to the Area Remote family. THE JUNKIES style has continued to evolve over the years under the influence of various genres of electronic music, ranging from deep soulful house to techno and everything in between. Drawing from these has resulted in a sound that has made them a consistently present force in the Toronto club scene for over 10 years as well as play alongside some of the worlds most respected artists including the likes of Steve Lawler. 2009 has been a great year for The Junkies recognising their talents through a string of stellar releases and chart toppers; including the hugely successful D-Mode EP, a collaboration with Rawthentic Music head honcho Carlo Lio and their solo projects Ritmo and Quatro Uno Sei. NATHAN BARATO has been a regular in the Toronto nightclub scene for nearly 15 years, gleaning inspiration from the club sounds and scenes from as far back as early 90's garage. Hes in heavy demand as a DJ in Toronto and since 2009 working hard in the studio with solo releases signed with Breakoutaudio, BWO, Local Music, his own label Roots And Wings plus some awesome collaborations such as this one. Do Not Sleep, the infamous party brand and label from Ibiza, took over San Francisco’s newest 24-hour club, Halcyon, on 18th February. For 5-hours the coveted Halcyon turntables were taken over by Do Not Sleep regulars Carlo Lio and Nathan Barato where the Canadian groove masters spun cosmic house into funky techno and kept crowds dancing until dawn.

Halcyon opened its doors in November 2016 with a mission to set the highest standards in clubbing. Since then it has welcomed some of electronic music’s most talented artists to the helm, including, Dubfire, Fritz Kalkbrenner (live), Madmotormiquel, Jan Blomqvist (live), Sharam, DJ Sneak, Serge Devant, Visionquest (Lee Curtiss & Ryan Crosson), Kenny Dope, Tiefschwarz, Lee Burridge, Marco Bailey and more. 

It was only a matter of time before the illustrious Do Not Sleep made its way across the Atlantic to bring its unique Balearic vibe to San Francisco. It’s unquestionable that these giants of the white isle was enticed by the multi-sensory clubbing environment created by the Halcyon family, which includes a hand-picked sound team, creative director & talent buyer, dancers and costume designers, all of whom hail from Ibiza. This team has ensured Halcyon is the first club in San Fran able to deliver events similar in quality and vibe to the best parties in Ibiza. 
 
But back to the mix in question, those who follow the scene will know that Carlo and Nathan are the brains behind the Rawthentic Music label, sometime studio partners, and regulars at Do Not Sleep Ibiza. 
 
For Carlo, his best known production is his remix of ‘Diablo’ by Dubfire and Oliver Huntemann that when released on Cocoon Recordings, topped charts everywhere. Ever since, Carlo’s discography has exploded, with his music catching the eyes and ears of some of the biggest labels on the market including, SCI+TEC, Bedrock Records, MOOD, Desolat, Suara, Intec Digital, and Mindshake Records just to name a few. 
 
For Nathan, it was Marco Carola first rinsing his 2012 hit ‘Hard Werq’ that shot him to fame and a spot on the Music On roster soon followed. Nathan was also championed by Jamie Jones who deemed him a new star at the Hot Creations camp while making Nathan’s ‘Wobble Talk’ EP a mainstay in his sets. Nathan’s music is being released on some of the most prestigious imprints in the industry, including the aforementioned Hot Creations and spinoff Hottrax, as well as Rekids, Cajual, Saved Records, MOOD, and of course, his very own Roots And Wings label. 
 
These DJs delivered something special to the Halcyon crowds for a marathon 5 hours. Listen back and go on a journey never before heard outside of the Halcyon walls.

What was often a city to strike gold and make your getaway, Toronto is beginning to bloom into a creative cosm of artists willing to push the boundaries of electronic music while still staying in city bounds. Nurturing talents in genres across the board from deep house to dubstep to techno and bass aplenty. Toronto has yet to have earn its fair share of spotlight, but the locals can feel it coming. One of those long standing natives is Nathan Barato, a staple to the city's underground house scene. With residencies at some of the most esteemed clubs like Industry, Stereo, and Footwork to count, Nathan is filled to the rim with dance floor knowledge and experience on how to make a room move. Naturally he progressed to the studio and has a slate of upcoming releases with the likes of Blackflag, Area Remote, Fantastic Friends, and his own local imprint he calls Roots and Wings Music. We really caught on to Nathan when he released Back Up Queen, a one off green room jam that saw remixes from 808 Fake and the world renowned  Oliver $. Nesting itself on the dapper London house label Rekids the release became a good look and a number that will surely put his name on the map.

The original mix makes its presence known in the track list this weekend as Barato makes a crisp transition from Oshana's "Acid Disco" into the breakdown which samples some watering hole bathroom banter. The tape was recorded live at Terrasses Bonsecours, a club situated right by the port in Old Montreal. Highlights include tracks from Den Ishu, Nikola Gala's "Only" which stood alongside Nathan's release on Rekids, and a 95 hit from Barbara Tucker. The intro is definitely noteworthy as it fades into a bit of nostalgia by Phil Weeks' in "By My Side" which employs the same Creative Source sample in a more recent Kanye West collaboration. And who can't forget Robert Hood's "Dancer" which turns the groove up to 11 and sets it up for C.G.P. to close with his seductive Omar S remix. It's 90 minutes of house bliss, so wrap yourself around it and peep our sitdown with Nathan below where we talk passion for DJing, house, and his native city.
