I began writing "Dakota" in Summer '19. I was preparing to move with my wife to Sioux Falls, SD from Indianapolis, IN. I began reading up on South Dakota history, from the historic blizzard of 1880-181, to the Black Hills Gold Rush; from Wild Bill Hickock at Deadwood to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. I also began reading "Dakota: A Spiritual Biography" by Kathleen Norris, which explores the spirituality of the prairies.

Together, history and spirituality planted the seeds for what would become stories and songs. I imagined a bull-rider with a death wish in "King of the Rodeo; a city boy who regrets leaving his prairie home in "My Old Prairie Home"; a terribly unlucky guy who decides to try his luck in the Black Hills gold rush in "Gold Rush Blues." In each song, I sought to capture the stories and sounds that, I feel, are essentially "Dakota."
