Is it a dream, a Jungian fantasy, a deep dive into the repressed psyche? Is it a malfunction? Or is it the one place where you can escape from the repetitive drone of the hive mind?

"Interlink: A" is the debut release from Unimatrix Zero, a collection of tracks for on and off the dancefloor from our friends across the North American dance music community.

Detroit-via-Ithaca's Otodojo provides a buoyant, aquatic and soothing entry point, remixing and completing track sketch "Unimatrix" from label co-founder Lychee. Portland's Braun picks up the energy with bright, skittering dub techno in "Slipstream," a track as ready for peak time as it is for a dreamy sunrise. Recent NYC transplant Sister Zo, with roots in Kansas City and Columbus, Ohio, brings the low-swung, percussive wiggle in "Mess Around," a slickly lubricated mechanical trip. NYC's Blacklauren, half of the Long Count Cycle, delivers a euphoric wormhole in "Teocalli," defly tempering tension and comfort. NYC favorite Kenya Kanazawa, with roots in Yamagata and Tokyo, evokes a dewy forest at dawn in delicate dubby reverie "Fog in the Floor." Label co-founder Guilt Attendant's contemplative closer, "Their Soul Thirsts in the Desert", is a track for yearning; what is the thing you are pining for that you aren't even sure you can recall?

'Let' is the first EP by Mike Crowley. It features four original tracks and a remix by Guilt Attendant (@nathanielyoung).

The EP emerged from Mike's interest in somatics, or the study of dance through autonomic, body-centric movement. Producing the tracks involved the same process of stepping away from self and letting sounds be.

The album art is from Nikolai Bernstein's socialist research into industrial movement during production processes, which was generated with an early time-lapse technique that used tiny strobelights.

With releases on Mysteries of the Deep and NYC cult label, Hospital Productions, Brooklyn techno supplicant Guilt Attendant makes a high-torque entry in the PPRZ catalog with four merciless cuts of functional, psychedelic, high-impact rave rollers.

Guilt Attendant opens with ‘Seasonal Recession’, a cavernous pumping track for cranking the pressure. Slippery, evolving synth jabs creep and echo in an expansive, uneasy soundscape as sharp percussion commands motion and attention.

A true psychedelic weapon, ‘A Callus Of Apathy’ rolls in with rubbery propulsion and smudgy atmospherics, contrasted with Guilt Attendant’s signature precision: razor-sharp percussion that ticks along with a mounting sense of urgency, pushed ever-further when a warping overtone synth worms its ways into the fray.

‘Architecture Of Oppression’ introduces a steady broken-beat bounce slung under a pointillistic rhythm. The track really begins to breathe as an echoing hit interplays with high-register blips, and the wash of patterns begin slipping past each other, sending heads spinning through the fog.

With ‘Gendered Death (Dub)’, Guilt Attendant weaves a jacking, machine-driven ripper, anchored by bouncy, tight chord stabs that are deftly modulated and with keen attention to dynamics.

Medical Records presents the eleventh release in our Transfusions 12” singles series. Guilt, the collaborative project of New York City based artists, Oliver Chapoy and Nathaniel Young, is the result of 2 recording sessions during the spring of 2017. Their self-titled debut perfectly illustrates their shared taste for cold and dissonant synth programing across 3 driving dance-floor ready cuts all rounded off by an unhinged remix from The Bunker New York’s Løt.te. The material focuses on blurring the lines between texture and melody and exploring the tonal qualities that result. For fans of labels such as Perc Trax, Aufnahme + Wiedergabe, Rodz-Konez, and Sonic Groove.

Guilt "Cult Leader Of My Youth" (MRT-011)

Blankstairs began as a series of all-ages DIY parties spawning from visual artists Nathaniel Young and Warren Mark Way. The events possessed a certain renegade and unhinged energy and, at the time, fulfilled their desire to engage with Portland’s music community. 

The events were hosted in art galleries and whatever various alternative spaces were at the two’s disposal at the age of 19. Local visual artists were often presented on the same plane as the musical performances driving the events. In time, the pair found themselves surrounded by friends seeking a suitable platform for their visual and musical output, and thus the label was born. 

The first release and compilation in July of 2013 presented a triad of subdued, stoned-out jams and somber ambient music, alongside club constructions of various shapes and sizes. Fast forwarding to the present finds Nathaniel and Warren both based out of New York and continuing to release music that represents the artists that are immediately involved in their lives –– the label being an expression of that which surrounds them. 

In celebration of six years of operations Blankstairs is excited to issue a three part compilation featuring work from artists based in both spiritual homes for the label –– Cascadia and New York City, a selection that we feel is an accurate representation from Blankstairs friends and family both near and far.

"Accosting Form, Pure Intent" — Nathaniel Young’s new album for Mysteries of the Deep — is a contradiction that makes sense. At once raw and elegant, it emerges from a place of constraint and desire. Its individual tracks reflect this paradox as the album unlocks itself like a koan: a riddle that, once solved, dawns on the listener like an epiphany. 

Despite the assorted elements at work, a visceral quality binds everything together. Even the record's more subdued works are textured and tangible, at times balancing or playing against the serrated edges of its more structured pieces. Like all compelling works, the sounds here exist in a liminal space that is not entirely classifiable. Still, it is wholly cohesive in both its moodiness and its adeptness. 

“The entirety of the LP was written using a Korg MS-20 Mini, Korg SQ-1 step sequencer, Korg Volca Beats, Korg Volca Kick, Behringer Model D, and a Zoom H4N. The core of each track was recorded live in one or two takes and subsequent synth parts were overdubbed after the fact. Since I was working solely with monophonic synths, I utilized a lot of panning in the overdubbing process to help create new harmonics, and even chords in some cases, which really helped flesh out the often extremely monolithic and singular sounding analog synths. Beyond that, as I mentioned, I really focused on creating sequences that I found I could listen to on repeat no matter their level of simplicity.”

The set is a mixture of material from my LP 'Accosting Form, Pure Intent' intertwined and reworked with fresh elements written specifically for the occasion. It was performed using Ableton Live and a Eurorack system sequenced with 2 Korg SQ-1s.

Nathaniel Young, is a multidisciplinary artist and producer based in Brooklyn, NY.

Born and raised amongst the cool greenery and porous fog of the Pacific Northwest, Young is a lifelong musician whose contemporary work explores techno through reductive and elemental processes, inverting its silhouette and navigating within its shadow.

Young, raised religious, was inspired by the power of community at a young age. Since then he has pushed against the inhibiting constraint of his upbringing, trading dogma and doctrine for empathy and candor.

In 2013, Young co-founded Blankstairs, a musical platform issuing cassettes and vinyl from electronic musicians from all over the world. After several releases under his own name and several aliases, his first album as Guilt Attendant arrives on Hospital Productions with the album ‘Suburban Scum’.

Presented on 2x12” ‘Suburban Scum’ is composed of eight groove-oriented, cold, introspective and sometimes violent techno, formatted in the unusual reverse composition of a descending narrative.

In the artist’s words: ’Can one be truly redeemed if their sins and their present form of reality bear no distinction?

The second chapter in the Mysteries compilation series is a departure from the airy, ethereal style of its predecessor, and instead offers an energetic, vibrant selection of tracks that fits with the summer season of its release. This comp is characterized by broken rhythm and lush ambience from a range of accomplished artists in New York and beyond, including but not limited to Tin Man, Abby Echiverri, rrao, Clay Wilson, M Parent, and label artists Nathaniel Young and Matthew Patterson Curry.

This is an anthology characterized by thought and intention; each track is a shining example of the artist’s distinct sound and craft. The first few arrangements bring to mind the natural world: a jungle’s canopy or a sweltering day. Tin Man contributes a bright, tonal opening, amplified by the distant sound of birds, before tdel’s “Nu,” minimal and percussive, leads us into deeper territory. Abby Echiverri’s “Varzea” builds off of this organically, providing rhythmic depth and hypnotic layering in a style reminiscent of the late 90’s.

The tracks sonically gel, and yet there are deviances in genre that make this a dynamic, compelling release. M Parent’s “Mysteries of the Street” is restrained, atmospheric electro at its finest. Clay Wilson and Obelus provide sparse, IDM-tinged rhythmic dreams, at once transcendent and visceral. “Shyama,” from rrao, is filled with meditative vocal loops that resound like a mantra. The contributions of label artists Nathaniel Young and Matthew Patterson Curry are examples of exquisite sound design. Each production is a testament to the skill and vision of each artist. Whether you’re seeking rhythmic or arrhythmic varieties of experimental music, this compilation is a superior selection of tracks, primed to withstand the test of time.
