Chances, Choices

This piece was written for the ADAM Audio Soundtrack Competition in connection to the Modernist masterpiece, 'Nighthawks' (1942), by American artist Edward Hopper. Loneliness and vulnerability in urban life troubled 1940's Americans, who succumb to the inability to connect with one another. Eyes, vacant and unmet, my compositional focus was to seperate contrasting instruments with phrases and melodic movement. Written to barely co-exist with one another, the solo vocal song-like phrases are interrupted and attempt to harmonise. Take Hopper's subjects who appear to be ostensibly presenting to be 'going fine' with their lives, I transposed from a beginning section in major, to a sustained eerie, minor cadence with an echoed bell to mirror the inevitable loneliness and paranoia Hopper's reality narrates.

Nathan Zammit is classically trained musician and composer, whose passion for music has led him to producing cinematic pop works that inspire collective climate action. Growing up in Melbourne, Australia, he studied classical and jazz piano at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School for 6 years. His love for creativity led him to studying a bachelor of music at the Melbourne Conservatorium of music, in which he specialised in composition and production. Alongside performing in venues across Melbourne and collaborating with infamous local musicians (on stage and in studio), he self-releases instrumental / electronic pop to empower people to make environmentally conscious decisions. His music combines curated sounds of the world, combined with the energy of talented instrumentalists to celebrate a symbiosis of people and nature, and the power we have to influence its wellbeing.
