The Drumcode A-Sides compilation is quickly becoming synonymous within the techno world as a go to compilation for the hottest tracks that are deservedly A-side material in their own right. Each specific track has it own unique character that brings an outstanding and electrifying aspect to the compilation that as a whole makes it something extremely special. Mixing both highly experienced and new artists has helped to bring a new dimension to the compilation that makes it such a special array of tracks.

Back at our mammoth Stay True Scotland broadcast earlier this month, one track came real close to bringing The Caves' roof down during Nina Kraviz's powerhouse headline set. "I Wanna Go Bang" very nearly executed its titular statement – well, if the song was more about wrecking balls and less about...oh, never mind.

The vocals that stalk the track, so wholly devoid of humanity, rub up against razor-sharp claps and serious bounce in the subs. It's weighty warehouse techno of the highest order, set to devastate dark basements and big tents alike throughout the year. Simply put: Icelandic producer Bjarki has delivered a bomb.

Premiere: Nina Kraviz 'Ghetto Kraviz' (Regal 303 Remix)

If you checked out our show on BBC Radio 1 last month you may have noticed something curious about the tracklist for Nina Kraviz's guest mix: eight of the 17 cuts she selected were by Bjarki. Kraviz used the mix to showcase the upcoming releases on her label Trip, and since it launched last year, Bjarki has emerged as its brightest talent. So far we've had just a taste of the Icelandic artist's style. His recent EP, Arthur And Intergalactic Whales, featured the wonderfully mindless "I Wanna Go Bang," which is shaping up to be one of the biggest techno tracks of 2015, and the more subtle but no less powerful "Orange Juice Man." His tracks for the Trip compilations De Niro Is Concerned and The Deviant Octopus were more functional, but "Revolution" and "Polygon Pink Toast" were both quietly unique. As strong as Bjarki's music has been so far though, it's his vast quantity of unreleased tracks that confirms just how bright his future could be. A brief biography on his Facebook page describes him as "a very low profile, stay-at-home audiophile," and below Bjarki says that it's a total necessity for him to bang tracks out quickly. This frees him to shoot off in many different directions while maintaining the rock-solid low-end that's become one of his trademarks. 

You'll see what we mean on RA.484. The mix is exclusively made up of unreleased Bjarki tracks, some of which will come out on Trip, some of which will never be released. The strikingly diverse hour takes in jacking, Chicago-influenced cuts, deadly serious deep techno, and a moment of hardcore revivalism that, like Bjarki himself, we're sure you'll be hearing more of. 


What have you been up to recently? 

We have been working on a music video for "I Wanna Go Bang." Very exited to see the final outcome. 

How and where was the mix recorded? 

In my basement in Copenhagen, where most of the tracks were made. 

Tell us about the idea behind the mix. 

It's a selection of tracks from earlier this year. All unreleased, some will be out on Trip and others might never see a release, who knows. I don't think all my music needs to be released. Sharing it with my Trip family members and see them playing it live is enough. 

The opening track in the mix is something that got me inspired after talking to a friend who is a ballet dancer. She told me about the serious steps ballerinas can go through. It sounded like a lot of pain and tears. I ended up writing a short fiction about a traumatised ballerina. She is in deep water, almost drowning, building up her strength and control as her movements are slow, struggling to dance her way up to the surface to breath. 

Do you tend to produce quickly? The volume of unreleased music in the mix would suggest so. 

Yeah I make music quite quickly. It's just like a photo, a moment of excitement that I capture and if I like it, it's done and I bounce it. Sometimes I make music right before a show and then just play it. Every time I spend too much time on it I end up getting really bored and lose the feeling. 

Tell us about the techno scene in Iceland. 

There has always been a lot of music coming from Iceland. There aren't many clubs in Reykjavik, mostly bars. There is one venue that has clubbing standards called Paloma, where we did our first Trip party. Maybe with the trip label we generated a buzz in the scene. Our cave party earlier this summer and my latest release caught a lot of attention.

What are you up to next? 

Learning more about composition, and working with real musicians. It's seems like a right moment for a deeper musical knowledge. I really need it to be able to create the music I want. So studying is definitely up next.

What's in a name? Surely the moniker by which you go about your daily business has no real bearing on the way you go about your tasks and the way that people treat you, right? But people still have that annoying habit of saying 'you look like a Keith', or any other name. There's no reason that that statement should EVER be said as it's clearly a load of nonsense by people who like to make up fantasies in their own heads.

A powerful combination that cements Berlin's ever strong, unfaltering plight in the techno world of today.

Rødhåd's 50WEAPONS inauguration may be delayed but, falling in at catalogue number #049 (close second to the grand finale), it's better late than ever. In the Elder Scrolls game-inspired "Oblivion", factory line drums pummel softly underneath, whilst faint synth sirens circle overhead. We can almost feel the smoke-filled, strobe-lit warehouse now. Trans A.M's (that full stop is important) debut offering is a class act. Not only is the Speechless EP a twosome of forceful techno guzzlers at its core, but whatever other influences they've shovelled in only seem to strengthen the deal. Example #1 being the title track. "Speechless" knits together broken, bass driven, robotic grooves with traces of dancehall dem bow riddim with a disastrous outcome. Catch it when it lands on January 30 via SPE:C.

After a series of releases on HAKT Recordings, Nicolas Jaar's Other People and a collab with Kasper Bjørke, Abstraxion returns to his own Biologic Records which he co-manages with DC Salas. Resonance Not only is this his first solo EP on the label since a few years, it's also the second release to celebrate  Biologic's 10th anniversary year. Resonance comprises of two original cuts and three remixes. Going from a peak time techno track by Matrixxman to a house rework by Fort Romeau and a disco infused version by Massimiliano Pagliara, the EP not only represents the label's diverse sound but also Abstraxion's own productions and ever evolving style.  As a next step, Abstraxion will release in 2016 his second LP She Thought She Would Last Forever, mixed by Francis Harris (Scissor & Thread, Adultnapper) and on which he already received support from his inspirations/ mentors Dan Snaith (Caribou) & John Talabot.

As we promised, Ellen Allien is back. The BPitch Control boss' latest instalment is the Turn Off Your Mind EP, comprising of two raw, unpolished tracks of pure techno magic produced on a Roland Aira TR-8, TVB 303 and a Jupiter Synth in Ellen's living room. The EP evokes music time travel – most reminiscent of her time spent DJing at E-Wrk, Planet and Tresor in 1990s Berlin. On the A-side sits 'Hoo'. A rolling 8:08 time span of kaleidoscopic acid-soaked patterns and a cyclical bass line, all generous on the reverb. Despite a low tessitura, 'Hoo's moments of euphoria are still palpable. Ellen brings the sheer joy and thrill back to Berlin techno.

29th April is the due date to turn up your speakers and Turn Off Your Mind. Grab it on Beatport a little earlier, from 18th April.

The quality of sound emanating from Ilian Tape's rooftops has been nothing short of amazing since the word go. Munich's own  Zenker Brothers stand proudly as the helmsmen. 

We had the honour of Debuting one of Marco and Dario's more recent airings as part of 50WEAPONS' closing series of split-singles; a run-in where their cameo royalties were shared with none other than Marcel Dettman. 

That being said, good music continues to flow through their own IT imprint. Number 30 comes from Turin native and longtime label friend, Stenny. 

From  Consume IV comes "Westward" – a heady, fast paced track of tunnel vision techno; both retro and futuristic in one gulp with elements that hark back to the 1990s British rave heyday.
