Joseph Alberto Castillo was born at UCI Medical Center on February 13, 1991 in the South County section of Orange in California. His mother Carmen Morales, a Babysitter, gave birth to him at the age of 22. Castillo’s biological father, Salvador Valencia who was a Tile Mason, abandoned the family when he was 1. When he was 2 years old his mother discontinued Babysitting and became involved in dealing drugs with Castillo’s stepfather Carlos “Cali” Sandoval. In 1999 Cali was incarcerated, then later deported to Mexico, after Anaheim DEA Task Force raided their apartment. In pursuit of a calmer environment Morales moved her family to Atwater California, a small town in Merced County, CA. In 2008 his mother too would go to prison on drug charges while Castillo was still in high school.

At age eleven Castillo joined an amateur P.A.L. boxing program and the following year started selling illegal drugs. His boxing coaches believed he showed promising potential but he would later leave the sport after 5 years. “I lost my love for boxing,” says Castillo, “music is where my heart’s at.” Castillo went to Buhach Colony High School where he had to attend summer school to obtain his H.S. diploma. He would later attend Merced College and drop out after a year of general ed. Castillo recalls, “I would lose out on too many opportunities while I was at school people would blow up my phone trying to get their fix and I really needed the money to survive, I was trapped.” In 2011 Castillo was arrested on marijuana and gun charges. He bailed out the next day and received two years of probation.

Castillo began writing music in 2005 at the age of fourteen under the stage name “Young Hood,” which he would later change to “Nation,” an alter ego he felt more suited to his image. He is influenced by 2Pac, 50 Cent, Lil’ Wayne and many more. In January 2013 after seven years of co-producing and collaborating on records he released his first independent mixtape, “The Street Files Vol. 1.” Three months later he followed up with “T.H.U.G. Nation.” He has since left the drug dealing business and is currently working on his fourth mixtape “Hunger & Pain: Part One.” He is scheduled to release his third mixtape “The Street Files Vol. 2” late this February. His mother is finally out of prison and he is more determined to overcome his long battles with struggle. He also plans to return to college this coming fall…
