Dear Charles, The first time I listened to this beautiful song/chant and your gentle voice with Vicky's pure, sweet tones it remained with me and as I listen again today it is so very familiar to me just as is the sadness caused by the atrocities perpetrated at Wounded Knee.  I have felt this since my late teens and couldn't even begin to tell you how it crept its spiritual sense into my heart all those years ago.  Thank you for sharing the story here on Sound Cloud.  It is such a privilege to be part of your world via internet.

From Charles... The Warrior's Song was first sung by a special man of the name of Brave Buffalo, also known as Eastman Papasan to his people, the Lakota Sioux.

Brave Buffalo was in attendance at the 1973 siege of Wounded Knee. In his prayers, he was gifted this song and simply called it the AIM song. Months later, he renamed it to the Warrior's Song.

Brave Buffalo was recognized by his people as a cultural adviser. He would often visit with Lakota medicine man Martin Highbear, and they would run sweat lodges and talking circles in which participants shared their concerns and struggles in recovery. Brave Buffalo introduced people and his clients to what is known as the Sundance.

This dance, which originated in the Great Plains, is one of the most sacred expressions of native spirituality. A four day event, it is usually not open to spectators or casual seekers. Dancers cut a sacred tree and carry it into a circular arbor, where they erect it in the center. The next day at daybreak, dancers will gather and tie colorful prayer ties to the tree and dancing begins. Men who are not dancing will gather around a sacred drum, while women sing to accompany the dancing. This dance goes on for 4 days.

Native people today are protective, sometimes even secretive, about the Sundance. They find it a powerful expression of healing and union with the earth.

Vicky and I wanted to record this song to honor this great human being, the late Brave Buffalo, who I was deeply honored to call my friend and brother.

Charles Littleleaf, born in Warm Springs, Oregon is a Native American flute player, traditional Native American flute maker and artist. As an enrolled tribal member of the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs Indian Reservation, Littleleaf is also an Honorary Member of the Pagan Blackfeet Band Reserve in Brocket, Alberta, Canada, and son of the late Chief Jack Littleleaf.
