Lianne La Havas’ backing singer, Frida Touray steps out showcasing her band

‘Pixies’ is the final single to be lifted from Native Dancer’s upcoming full LP, ‘Tides’ .

Already boasting a fan base that includes the likes of Jamie Cullum (BBC Radio 2) Huey Morgan and Don Letts (BBC 6Music)

Native Dancer, the self proclaimed “moody love-child of Beyoncé and Weather Report”, make soulful, jazzy, psychedelic music that blends power and directness.

‘Transitions’ is the 4th single from Native Dancer’s upcoming album ‘Tides’ .

On ‘Transitions', we have an emotional ballad that speaks of the frustrations within a relationship. Two people try to evolve as individuals but also as a unit, simultaneously.  Frida’s vocals once again take centre stage, with a perfectly restrained role from the band backing her. As the intensity builds within the track, synth lines and vocals swirl around each other playfully building to a dramatic end. 
 
In a wider sense ‘Transitions’ speaks of the ever evolving nature which Native Dancer encompassed with the album’s title, ‘Tides’.  The constant process of coming into existence then receding, referring to the growing pains of a relationship and ultimately the universe as it moves towards higher levels of consciousness. “As above, so below”.

TRANSITIONS

Following on from previous single ‘Currents’, supported by Clash Magazine, Jamie Cullum (BBC Radio 2), Huey Morgan and Don Letts (BBC 6Music). The self proclaimed moody love-child of Beyoncé and Weather Report, are ready with their second. 

 

‘Mumbai’ further exemplifies the band’s unique sound with solid performances and a nod to their jazz roots. 

The soaring, soulful vocals of Frida Touray are once again at the heart of the song, this time detailing otherworldly themes that seem particularly potent at this moment.

 

Touching on an idea of a non-material universe, discouraging the labelling and judgment that sometimes prevents one from experiencing a deeper truth. 

 

Native Dancer’s cumulative observations, thoughts and words are what shapes their world. In that, globally, we are all participants of reality. Only through our own fears do we rebuild over again in dysfunctional ways. Often failing to see that we have a choice, a choice to rebuild the world through the state of wonder.

 

‘Mumbai’s outro features percussionist Kaw Secka playing the Gambian talking drum, an important feature, referencing Frida's paternal Gambian heritage. 

 

On their journey up until now, the band played a string of shows in the US, including SXSW and Afropunk Festivals, alongside Shabaka Hutchings (Sons Of Kemet), Moses Boyd and recent Jazz FM breakthrough award winner, Nubya Garcia. They have also performed at WOMAD and Love Supreme Festival as well as opening slots in London for NAO at Somerset House and Lianne La Havas at EARTH.

Birthed from deep within London’s burgeoning Jazz resurgence, Native Dancer have been setting levels across the capital’s live scene (and beyond) over the past two years. Five individual artists who together set out to create a music that speaks from the heart and denies none of their influences in a genre twisting mashup of styles with elements of pop, soul, electro-funk, jazz, rock and dance music.
These sonic explorers have created a sound world that attempts to dissolve boundaries fusing acoustic instruments, synthesizers and samples. The music evokes ideas of parallel realities, a common element that connects everything and ultimately promotes peace and love.
