Guadeloupe, Trinidad & Tobago, St. Lucia: you might be inclined to think these specks in the Lesser Antilles aren't exactly conventional outposts for quality, right? Well, think twice. Music touches all corners of the map and with some determination, you can happen upon gems from almost any time and place in human history. That open-ended, curious mentality provides sustaining fuel for all the finest diggers – and Deano Sounds of Boston is right up there with the very best of them. His label Cultures of Soul are a true office, traipsing an impressively broad landscape and picking the sweetest fruits.

We premiered a track off the first Tropical Disco Hustle and were harassing poor Jeff for the second instalment before it had even been sent for mastering, but with good reason! "Caribean People" (spelling intentional) is a super rare cut from 1980, given a lick of new paint from Parisian rework maestro Waxist Selecta, who stretches the African-lilting groove here n there, switching up tempo at will. It's gold; unsurprisingly, the entire compilation is. Cop it May 5th.

Broken beat’s legacy is one that’s easy to miss if not given ample TLC. Just a quick bat of the eyelids, and one of the capital’s most exciting movements can flash by. A movement that inadvertently nudged soul and boogie through the early 2000s in its own way. A movement that fed on the best parts of jazz, soul and electronica and left a lot of goodness in its wake.

The producers behind 2000black are some of its main powerhouses. Established in 1998 by Dego, the likes of multi-instrumentalist Kaidi Tatham and musical director Akwasi are key ambassadors of the sound.

After a 2014 that spawned beauties like Darkest Pumpkin‘s “Let It Be/That Feeling” and March’s Lordamercy they’re back. They resurface with three new tracks – each of which are strong nominees for Debuts. “Make It Hard” was the office shoo-in. The type of track to instantly make heads knock back and forth like nodding Churchill dog playthings. Jovial polyrhythms galore, the allure of soothing rhodes and all bundled on top of a slick bass underbelly.

„Reworks Vol. 4“ is the last issue of a whole series of stunning edits for the forgotten, Venezuelan producer and studio engineer Daniel Grau. DJs and producers like  Daniel Wang, Max Graef, Ray Mang and Debonair have all completed their very own and personal interpretations of Grau's Tropical Cosmic Disco world for Sonar Kollektiv. Now works by Mark E, Fajra Fantasmo, Marcel Vogel and Jacques Renault succeed for this 4th issue.

It's not the first remix Mark E has done for Sonar Kollektiv. But with all due respect to his previous achievements this edit of Grau's “Combination” (off the 1981 album „Por Que No Podemos Hacerlo?“) is probably one of the most astounding things Mark Evett has perpetrated so far (by a hair's breadth behind his inofficial edit of Birth Control's “Plastic People). Hynotic funk right on the bass drum with filter effects applied so perfectly that the party will get going at the latest when this track drops in. The whistle-along tune „Con El Cielo En Tus Ojos“ (off Grau's LP „El Leon Bailarin„) is morphed by Fajra Fantasmo into most peculiar techhouse. We're all wound up to a high pitch to see how in the midst of a grimy DJ set this remix will set a grin of all the dancers faces by its jauntiness. By contrast New York based Jacques Renault opens up a jar of jam with his edit for “Atlantis” and sets the mood right for a sugary sunset. And when it comes to unbridled funkyness who else the Amsterdam based Marcel Vogel would do a better job by editing “Corre Caminos” (also off Grau's “El Leon Bailarin” album)? His restoration work shines with authenticity and accuracy for modern dance floors.

With the digital download you get again an incentive: “Funky Bit-Bop” (off the 1983 released “440 Toker” LP) is getting stripped by Mark E to the bone only to pumped up again to become a brute little tigress painting clubland red.

Daniel Grau can be quite proud of by who, and how his legacy has been worked with. Let's hope this is inspiration for him to produce even more, fresh, fantastic music.

There’s a wonderful lightness of being to John Barera & Will Martin's productions. Barera's solo contribution to our then-nascent  Upfront series  was a delightful tour through their native Boston, but it's when the pair get together that the magic truly occurs. It’s music tailor-made for planting a smile firmly on two hundred faces as things lift off at 1am, and we're delighted to present the next instalment in their faultless catalogue to the world. 

On releases prior they've plumped for more driving kicks, more arresting vocals, more forthright piano stabs – compared to the likes of "Say It Now" or "It's Alright", "1,2,3 (Feels Right)" is a touch more subdued. It's all relative though, as the track is no less emphatic and certainly no less effective; there's a twinkling lead subtly spiralling throughout, reminiscent of "Ragysh"'s eternal wind-down. The entire EP is killer, and due out on Argot no less – a label that, much like JB&WM, is quietly but diligently establishing a 'buy-on-sight' reputation. Cop it in a few weeks.

John Barera & Will Martin "1,2,3 (Feels Right)" - Boiler Room Debuts

It’s now something of an overused trope to say the music coming out of Vancouver, BC sounds a) like the notoriously misty harbour town & b) amazing. Both are true, though. Labels like 1080p and Mood Hut (of which Local Artist is part of the crew) have carved out a sonic niche that is unmistakably theirs: left-of-the-dial dance music that is at once spry and smoked-out; evocative and untraceable; deep and featherlight.
 
The entire Feelings 12” carries these traits forward; a “Place” of warmth and comfort you want to be 24/7. Given our very own Bradley Zero has been one of the most prominent figures evangelising Thy Gospel of the Hut, and that his Rhythm Section label is fast garnering a rep for hazy jams of the highest quality, this crossover makes a lot of sense. Local, exported global.

Natural Selection originated as a weekly radio show, on the magnificent LRSfm in Leeds, with a supporting Friday night slot in Leeds student union’s Terrace bar and has continued as a series of irregular events, mixes and podcasts ever since.

Originally founded by Bobby Parafino in 2003, the show aimed to showcase an eclectic selection of worldwide beats and treats, a philosophy carried on by Horace James after he took up the reins two years later.

Featuring a host of guest appearances and mixes from Leeds’ most loved DJs and musicians, Natural Selection’s successful mix of everything from jazz, house and disco, to hip-hop, soul, latin and afrobeat built up a loyal following and culminated in a nomination for the national SRAs specialist music show.

This blog aims to showcase that same eclectic style of alternative dance floor fodder and to promote those nights, DJs, artists and events that continue to thrill and inspire ten years down the road.

Nowadays, you can find Horace producing the fortnightly Takeover sessions on Manchester’s Reform Radio.
