2000 was the year. 

The start of a new millennium was the time to settle down to the serious business of THE FUNK and Jalapeno Records was brought to life by Elliot Ireland and Alex Rizzo better known as Skeewiff. Their quirky and exotic take on funky breaks gave Jalapeno its special flavour and attracted killer talent like the Dutch masters Kraak & Smaak. I took over running the label a couple of years after its birth and have been proud to build on what they started ever since.

Jalapeno is a label that supports artists. 

Many of our long-term acts do much of their own A&R and have the final say on exactly what they release. It’s been a formula that works. Skeewiff released 3 albums with us, ephemerals released 4 albums, The Allergies have released 4 albums, Kraak & Smaak released 5 albums and Smoove & Turrell have just dropped their 6th album (our first official UK chart Number 1). Alongside those we have had incredible albums from (deep breath...) Alexia Coley, Izo FitzRoy, Gizelle Smith, Dr Rubberfunk, Flevans, Basement Freaks, Soopasoul, Aldo Vanucci, Featurecast, Radio Trip, Quasamodo and Max Sedgley as well as numerous singles.

I’m exceptionally proud that many of these acts have chosen to stay with Jalapeno Records for such long periods of their careers. 

The evolution of the label from sample based high jinks to full band studio recordings and touring bands has been an exciting one. That’s not to say we don’t still love a dancefloor rocker made by a DJ / Producer, but there is something special about releasing and publishing great original music. You know things are going right on that front when your catalogue is sampled for a massive dance hit or selected for an iconic sync placement.

In our 20th year we are still experiencing new highs and getting excited about new music all the time. 

So to all the artists who have made the label what it is, the great people on the Jalapeno Team and the fans who have supported the label, by buying records or streaming or coming to gigs - it’s a massive cheers from me.

Science Is Whatever We Want It To Be

My monthly 'Snapshot' mix for September 2023! This time the direction goes straight across the musical garden: Reggae, Latin, Soul, R&B, Hip Hop, Nu Funk, Breaks, Nu Disco, etc.

Featuring music from artists such as Bahama Soul Club, The Resolvers, Dubben meets Made In Brasil, Los Invasores, Timewarp Inc, Soul Tune Allstars, Jalen Ngonda, Cookin' On 3 Burners, Aphrose, Killer Mike, Cypress Hill, Lipphead, Marcel Vogel & LYMA, Jayl Funk, Gloria Ann Taylor, Smoove & Turrell, and others...

A main topic of this mix is the label Fort Knox Recordings from Washington DC, which is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary - of course with a first class label compilation, which should not leave any armpit dry: "Another Decade of Fort Knox Recordings" contains 20 highlights from the labels second decade from 2013-2023.
For me, a welcome occasion to dish up a mini-mix from this compilation + the terrific remix by The Allergies, of the Fort Knox Five anthem "Insight", which has been released as a single (all included in the mix from 1:07:15 - 1:29:10 playtime; 9 Fort Knox bombs packed in 22 minutes.).

Snapshot 2023-09

Yo-ville! Welcome to episode #77 of The Allergies podcast. On the show this month we have heat from Ruckus Roboticus on Bomb Strikes, a Moneyshot remix on Cuttin’ It Fine, and a bubbling Krafty Kuts rework of a Fort Knox 5 sunshine classic. Plus, a toasty Tune of The Month from Double A on Mountain 45s, and a guest mix from the flames Frenchmen, Souleance. It’s all hot to trot on another scorching show. Let’s go!

Episode #77 (with guests Souleance)

40 years ago saw the release of the first volume of major label pop compilations that quickly became a household name, and remain so to this day, 'Now That's What I Call Music!' 

As a kid in the 80s, these albums got a ton of plays from me & my family; at home, in the car, to the walkman soundtracking my walk (or run!) to/from school.

The first 9 volumes were on vinyl or tape only, appearing on CD from No.10 onwards. They were always cheaper than buying loads of singles anyway. We didn't have internet playlists back then. If you wanted to hear a variety of the latest big hits, there was the radio, mixtapes or compilations like Now. So this is an internet radio mixtape about a compilation. 

Now! was basically the UK successor to the K-Tel / Ronco / TOTP "as seen on TV" type comps & have seen off a bunch of rivals over the years, in terms of brand recognition. They are undisputedly the most successful pop compilation series of all time, across the world.

This is a mix of 50 tracks over 100 minutes, plucked from Vol's 1-10 (Nov 1983 - Nov  1987).
A random selection of feel-good mid-80's nostalgia - pop, soul and rock chart smashes.
Some would say guilty pleasures, but standardly I feel no guilt. 

This could have been a million hours long, so I set myself some selection rules...

Criteria:
- All tracks taken from UK releases of Vol.1 (28th Nov 1983) to Vol. 10 (23rd Nov 1987) only
- I haven't included any tracks featured on my previous Xennials 80's mixes
- Nothing from spin-off comps (Now Dance etc), or ones released later on
- No more than one track from each artist, whether solo or in a group
- No re-issues (lots of older tracks charted & were featured on these comps)
- I capped it at 50 tracks precisely for this mix, for brevity. There may need to be another…
